Absolutely, a Mom of Three Can Rock a Bikini!
Last summer, as the warm weather rolled in, I was pleasantly surprised to find a Victoria’s Secret swimsuit catalog in my mailbox. I was puzzled about how my name ended up on that list, considering I typically stick to my comfy Hanes. Flipping through the catalog, I couldn’t help but dream about wearing a bikini—a bubblegum pink one with those cute ’70s side strings. I envisioned those ties resting on smooth, tanned legs and a long, lean torso.
But here’s the kicker: aside from a few distant memories, I had never worn a bikini. For years, I believed that if I couldn’t pull it off perfectly, I shouldn’t bother. So, I opted for swim dresses and cover-ups instead. In fact, I even managed to avoid wearing a swimsuit for an entire summer—twice! With my aversion to water, be it pool or ocean, it was easier than you’d think to skip the bathing suit.
Then I spotted a pink and green string bikini on page 29 of that catalog. Something shifted inside me. Did I really think I could wear this now? Almost 45 with three kids and a stretch-marked belly—was I kidding myself? Logic said no, but a sense of urgency took over. This might be my last chance to wear something like that before middle age really hit!
Before I knew it, I had ordered the bikini. When it arrived, I was thrilled—until it was time to wear it out in public. I kept telling myself, now or never as I looked at my floral swim dress. With a mix of excitement and anxiety, I put on the bikini along with a cover-up I planned to keep on. But once I arrived at the beach and saw all the bodies around me, I felt a surge of confidence. I was a woman over 40, tired of hiding behind a distorted self-image.
I didn’t exactly throw off my cover-up and prance around, but I did lounge on a chair, feeling both proud and terrified. By my next beach trip, I even stood up and walked near the water! I wore that bikini all summer, and guess what? I just ordered a new one in blue.
