I’m Doing My Best to Avoid Becoming One of the “Momarazzi”

These days, it feels like every parent is part of the “Momarazzi” or “Popparazzi” brigade. I can’t count how many times I’ve attended my kids’ events only to find myself watching through my phone instead of enjoying the moment. It’s so easy to get caught up in trying to capture every memory that we sometimes forget to actually experience them. Isn’t it a bit ironic? When we prioritize photography over participation, are we actually losing out on those precious moments?

I often long just to be present, but technology seems to pull me away, like a sneaky distraction lurking in the grass. While I adore having the ability to take photos, I sometimes find myself frustrated by it too.

We live in a time where parents are rarely without a camera, ready to snap away at any occasion—be it good, bad, funny, or mundane. Back in the day, capturing moments took effort; now, a parent can easily accumulate hundreds of photos in a weeklong vacation. The convenience of digital cameras means we can take countless pictures without worrying about running out of film. This endless snapping can feel both liberating and overwhelming, adding another layer of distraction to our already busy lives.

I’m constantly trying to strike that balance. It’s a work in progress. My kids often remind me when I’ve crossed the line into overly enthusiastic photo-taking territory. They’ll roll their eyes or refuse to smile, and I have to pause and consider how over-documented our lives have become. Their annoyance is valid; it can be intrusive, even when that’s not my intention. Those eye rolls snap me back to reality, reminding me to be present and enjoy the moment. Just like Marty McFly, I know how much there is to cherish in the here and now before it slips away.

In summary, while capturing memories through photos is tempting, it’s crucial not to let technology distract us from living fully in the moment. Balancing between being a participant and a photographer is an ongoing challenge, but it’s one worth tackling.
