Is Brotherly Love a Real Thing?

You know, when you’re pregnant, your mind can go a bit haywire. It’s not just the hormones messing with you—though let’s be honest, they play a part. I mean, during one of my many third trimesters, I found myself crushing on a grown-up version of Ron Weasley! But the truly bizarre stuff? That’s all in your head.

Suddenly, all those childhood memories fade away. Everything you thought you knew as a kid seems irrelevant when you’re the one bringing new life into the world. The first time I watched my kids interact, it hit me hard; it was like I was seeing my own childhood play out again. But let me tell you, it wasn’t the sweet sibling bond I imagined. No, it felt more like a mashup of The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies.

I had this naive notion that I was giving my kids lifelong friends. In reality, I was just creating a couple of sparring partners. I have a younger brother who was three years younger than me, and I can’t recall a single moment when he wasn’t the most irritating person ever. He was like the kid brother from Can’t Buy Me Love mixed with Fudge from Judy Blume’s books. Every time I tried to be nice—maybe even give him a hug—I ended up regretting it. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Now, my two older boys are five years apart, and watching them interact is like stepping back in time three decades. They love each other, but good luck getting them to share a room peacefully! Their playtime often ends in punches and tears—sometimes with the classic dead leg move thrown in. I can see my oldest son’s frustration all over him; he wants to love his brother but sometimes wishes he was anyone else. On the flip side, my middle son looks like he just wants to be seen as an equal rather than the pesky little brother.

Today, my brother and I are super close. Sure, we may have our differences, but I know he’s always got my back, and I’d do the same for him. I really hope my boys find that connection too—where they can just pick up the phone to chat or grab drinks after work because they genuinely want to hang out. Until then, I’m just trying to keep them from going full gladiator on each other!

In summary, the journey through sibling relationships can be a wild ride, often filled with love, annoyance, and everything in between. Just like childhood, it’s complicated but worthwhile.
