I Can’t Stand School: Here’s Why Summer’s My Favorite Season
As summer draws near, my excitement is off the charts—I might even dislike school more than my kids do! I’m counting down the days until the last week, the final day, and that glorious last hour of the school year. Honestly, the only redeeming quality of school is that someone else is teaching my kids. Whether it’s homeschooling or public schooling, once Easter break hits, I’m ready to call it quits. But alas, public schools have these annoying attendance rules, making it feel like we’re trapped.
Things That Drive Me Insane About School
Let’s talk about the things that drive me insane about school. For starters, the endless parties—seriously, how many celebrations can a fifth-grade class have in one year? And the constant, “Mom, can you drive?” Ugh! I hope my daughter’s determination helps her in the future because it’s testing my patience right now.
Then there’s homework, which I absolutely dread. The ridiculous projects these teachers think are a good idea? No thanks! State reports? Hard pass! And reading after homework? You can’t be serious; do they think kids have time for that after brushing their teeth?
And don’t even get me started on fundraising. It’s not really the kids doing the fundraising; it’s us parents who end up buying all the stuff anyway. Honestly, I’d rather just write a check at the beginning of the year and avoid the stress of all those magazines and candy bars we’re “supporting” the class with. The science fair? A chaotic nightmare involving glue and messy projects. Can’t my kid just write a report about fungus instead of growing it?
Missing the bus and the panic of racing to get the kids to school before the tardy bell? The school’s more concerned about a ten-year-old being late than they are about real criminals. At least my kids eventually make it to school; there should be an award for just showing up!
The Transition to Junior and Senior High
Things don’t improve as they transition to junior and senior high. You’d think you could finally blend into the background, but nope! It gets a lot messier. Managing a hormonal teen’s homework, checking grades online, meeting with counselors, and juggling sports practices and games—it’s a full-time job. It feels like you’re never home, and chores pile up while you’re out driving kids everywhere.
The Joy of Summer Break
But wait! There’s a shining light at the end of the tunnel: summer break! Ah, the sweet escape from homework, tests, and field trips. Suddenly, the days stretch out with free time. Shopping at Target at any hour? Yes, please! The kids can go to camp, stay with Grandma and Grandpa, or just hang out with friends outside all day. I love waking up without the stress of missing the bus, enjoying real showers instead of quick ones, and picking out actual outfits—not just yoga pants and a hat. One of the best parts? Drinking coffee from a real cup without a lid; it’s pure bliss!
By mid-August, though, I’ll be back to feeling tired and a little grumpy, wishing for summer to last just a bit longer. I’ll probably make a scene outside the school on the first day—don’t judge; we all have our moments!
