The Joy of Unplugged Family Time
Over time, some of the kids’ chores have either fallen by the wayside or been taken over by someone else. My partner, Jake, has made feeding the dog a part of his nightly routine, and judging by the amount of fur on the floor today, it looks like dog-brushing duties have been neglected. But one tradition has stuck: our evening dog walk as a family.
When the kids were younger, it was easy to gather everyone, including our pup, for a stroll through the greenbelt every night. These days, we only manage to corral the whole family on those warm summer evenings when neither homework nor bad weather gets in the way. Even then, our family outings seem too rare. This week, however, we found a window in our schedules and, as luck would have it, the weather was unseasonably nice, so off we went on our evening walk. It was the perfect way to wind down after a busy day, and if the night had ended there, I still would have considered it a huge win—family dinner and a family walk felt like hitting the jackpot!
But it got even better.
We live in a world where parenting and family life are often hyper-scheduled. Yet, there are those moments that can’t be planned, bought, or scripted. After returning home, I stepped outside to cool my feet in the pool. I watched as my kids poured lemonade in the kitchen, expecting them to grab their drinks and retreat to their separate spaces with their devices. Instead, one child quietly made their way outside, soon followed by the other, with Jake and the dog trailing behind. Without skipping a beat, we all gathered at the pool’s edge, picking up our conversation from the walk. It was simply wonderful.
It felt like a special gift.
As we navigate this transitional phase with our daughter heading off to college soon and our son not far behind, I find myself filled with hopes for their futures. My most selfish wish? That even as they build their own lives and families, we still find time to gather under the evening sky, enjoying each other’s company and chatting about everything or nothing at all. Just like this.
