Why 40 Has Been the Best Year of My Life
You know, I used to be such a label snob back in the day. In my teenage years, if it wasn’t from a trendy store, I wanted nothing to do with it. I rocked mall hair, Keds, tight-rolled jeans, and Hypercolor shirts—you name it. It was all about how I looked. Fast forward to today, and I can’t believe I ever thought spending more than $20 on jeans was okay!
Recently, we needed to upgrade our old car, and I fought the idea of getting a minivan until the last minute. I wasn’t ready to give up my coolness just yet, especially since our family of four fit perfectly in an SUV. But once we test-drove a minivan “just to see,” I was sold. The space! The nifty gadgets on the dashboard! Plus, it felt like I could now drive slower and prioritize safety. Sure, we might not roll up to the cool table, but at least we’re cozy and happy in our ride.
1. Recognizing My Value as a Mom
For a long time, I felt underappreciated, but now that my kids are older, I see so much of myself in them. It’s working! Sure, there are a few less-than-desirable traits, but on the whole, the core is good.
2. Embracing My Body
I finally put on my swimsuit and played in the water with my kids! I used to be super self-conscious about my imperfect body, preferring to sit on the sidelines. But now, I’m right there with them at the splash pad, soaking wet and having a blast. I may not be strutting around in a bikini, but I’d rather join in the fun than wait for a “perfect” body.
3. Letting Go of Fear
For years, I pretended to be tough, but I was really just scared of what others thought. Life is too short for that! I’ve learned to relax and embrace who I am, and I find so much peace in just being myself.
4. Rediscovering My Dreams
I used to believe that settling down and having kids meant I had to stick to a job I hated forever—kind of like Dan and Roseanne. But after stepping away from my job I actually enjoyed to focus on the kids, I started asking myself, “What now?” I remembered my passion for creative writing from high school.
5. Reclaiming My Talents
And guess what? I started a blog and I absolutely love it! Writing has become a breath of fresh air for me. I was terrified of failing, but I realized I’d do it regardless of who read it.
6. Chasing the Dream
I began to wonder if I could turn this into a career. I wasn’t confident, but I dove into learning about freelance writing, pitching clients, and writing articles. I did it scared, and it actually took off! People resonate with my writing, and I’m thriving.
7. Supporting Others
I’ve also stopped competing with others and started uplifting them instead. It’s pointless to compare ourselves; everyone is on their own journey. If you’re 40, you have so much wisdom to share—don’t hesitate to offer it. True greatness comes from helping others.
8. The Secret to Life
The biggest revelation I’ve had? Shifting my focus away from myself has been life-changing. When I help others, my own problems seem to fade. Volunteering at a local homeless shelter has given me incredible perspective.
9. Opening Up Again
For years, I built walls around my heart, afraid of getting hurt. But I’ve learned that there’s so much more good than bad out there. I’m pushing myself back into the world and rediscovering connections.
Now, at 40, I’ve shed the labels, the awkward hair, and the attitude. It’s just me, and honestly, I’m having the best year of my life. If you happen to see a sweet gold minivan with tinted windows cruising around (probably lost), be sure to wave!
