Incredible Dad Crafts Star Wars-Inspired Helmets for His Son
When Mike and Sarah Thompson’s son Liam was just two months old, their pediatrician pointed out an issue with the shape of his head. They soon discovered that Liam had craniosynostosis, a condition where one or more joints in a baby’s skull fuse too early, preventing the brain from developing normally and leading to a misshapen head. After exploring their options, they opted for a less invasive surgery, which meant Liam would need to wear a helmet for at least 22 hours a day until he turned one.
Determined to make the best of the situation, Mike decided to customize Liam’s helmet. He painted a series of helmets with a cool Star Wars theme. “If he has to wear it anyway, let’s make it fun!” Mike shared with us. “We figured these helmets would make people say, ‘Oh wow, that’s a cool helmet!’ instead of asking what was wrong with our boy.”
Here are a few snapshots from Mike’s Instagram showcasing Liam’s awesome helmets. Liam celebrated his first birthday this past summer without his helmet. While he won’t remember this time, the photos will show him how his family went above and beyond to make him feel special and loved during that period.
