My Personal Obsession: HGTV

I promise, I’m not into anything scandalous! I’ve never splurged on those adult channels in hotels, and my online history is squeaky clean. Why shell out cash for outdated content when there’s a fresh, absolutely family-friendly alternative available for free? Just tune into channel 665 (HGTV in HD on my setup) and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

It’s impossible not to get drawn into the captivating realm of stunning soapstone countertops, sleek subway tile backsplashes, eclectic pegged board flooring in cozy entryways, and custom shoe shelves tucked away in walk-in closets that would make even the Cousins on Call kitchens look basic. And let’s not even talk about those closets—I could ramble on forever! I’m utterly taken.

I often find myself glued to the screen late into the night, holding my breath to see if that adorable family of three (with another little one on the way!) will choose to Love It or List It. I’m usually rooting for them to love it—who wouldn’t be mesmerized by the transformation of a dreary basement into an incredible game room, home office, guest space, and a full bathroom? Seriously, it’s jaw-dropping!

And don’t even get me started on the Property Brothers! Their ability to turn a dated 1970s Cape Cod fixer-upper into a dream home for a couple who wants to stay close to the city yet have room for their dogs, a yoga studio, and a music room is pure magic. All of that, and they do it on a budget that might just cover a new HVAC system for me—maybe. Plus, they pull it off in a timeline that’s laughable compared to how long it took me to clear out my garage last spring.

While I might not always agree with every design choice made by my favorite HGTV stars, I’m still totally enamored with what they create. Media rooms, oversized garages, and custom fire pits aren’t my cup of tea, but I respect that they bring joy to others.

I know I’m not alone in this obsession. A recent girls’ night out with my college pals turned into a lengthy chat about our latest guilty pleasures. Some even introduced me to gems like Rehab Addict and Fixer Upper. Have you seen what Rehab Addict can do with a fireplace? It should be illegal!

Sure, there are better ways to spend my time, but there are certainly worse, right? For now, I’ll continue to indulge in my guilty pleasure until the House Hunters score that perfect bungalow right by the water and park—well below budget, of course. Works for me!
