This School Year, I’m Going to Be ‘That Mom’
As summer flew by—thank you, 972 snow days—I’m feeling invigorated and ready to tackle this school year as the ultimate organized mom. Yes, that’s right! I’m committing to being That Mom who gets her act together to help her kids thrive.
Here’s the deal, friends: I’ve got three boys attending three different schools this year—elementary, middle, and high. I’ve officially entered what I like to call the Chaos Zone, where I’ll be juggling three distinct school schedules. This year is all about making it work, but who says survival has to be a messy endeavor? I’ve been getting crafty on Pinterest, creating well-organized “Homework Stations” and “Snack Centers” that are both functional and adorable. Just last night, I prepped 25 individual snack packs of pretzels and carrot sticks because—let’s face it—it’s more cost-effective than buying those pre-packaged options. And yes, I’m all in for organic yogurt, dedicating an entire fridge shelf for bento box lunches. This Average Mom is on her way to becoming That Mom!
In my quest to evolve, I’m even embracing the overly specific school supply list without a peep of complaint. If they want a 1-ounce jumbo glue stick instead of a four-pack of .26-ounce sticks (which, by the way, were on sale!), that’s what I’ll get! And if I can’t locate the much-coveted plastic, yellow, two-pocket, three-pronged folders—because some supermom probably scooped them all up for resale on the black market—I won’t stress it. I’ll cheerfully grab one plastic green two-pocket folder and one paper yellow one, letting the teacher choose her preference. Generosity for the win! That Mom is all about giving.
I’ll approach everything with a smile, mostly because I remember that happy hour is conveniently located at the Bonefish Grill next door. Yes, new leaf and all that jazz, but this transformation definitely requires a little liquid courage. And as I settle in, I notice I’m surrounded by fellow That Moms, quietly enjoying their pinot grigios and indulging in crispy Bang Bang Shrimp, all while sharing tales about Ticonderoga pencils. It’s a comforting scene—my tribe, a mix of Average Moms and That Moms, united in this crazy journey. One of them even makes room for me at the bar and hands me the cocktail menu.
Now I just have to find out which of us has the inside scoop on those elusive black-market folders.
