Mom, I’m Nervous About First Grade

When my child shared his worries with me, I found myself reflecting on my own childhood experiences, almost as if channeling Sigmund Freud! Yes, my little one is also the child of immigrants. A few years ago, I left my homeland and moved to North America with my partner. We speak English at home, and my son, Alex, is quite comfortable reading and writing it. He’s familiar with the school environment he’ll be stepping into come September. His senior kindergarten teacher took the class on several visits to the schoolyard during the year. Plus, he’s been playing there since he was a toddler, and having attended preschool at the same facility, he knows some of the staff and even a few hidden corners of the building. This certainly isn’t like my own daunting experience many years ago.

I often find myself worrying about connecting with Alex; it seems like cultural differences can sometimes create a barrier for us. In this moment, I overlooked a chance to build a deeper connection by truly listening. Instead of focusing on his feelings, I unintentionally shifted the conversation toward my own memories. I didn’t need to solve anything right then; I simply needed to let him express himself.

Tomorrow when Alex wakes up, I won’t be perfect. I’m bound to miss other important cues, but we’ll talk about first grade again. I’ll ask him that classic question kids often pose to their parents: “Why?” and this time, I’ll make sure to really listen.

In summary, it’s essential to create an open dialogue with our children, especially when they express their fears. Listening is key to building a stronger bond, and it’s okay to not have all the answers right away.
