9 Outrageous Blunders Sleep-Deprived Moms Make

Navigating the baby and toddler years can leave any mom feeling like a zombie, and sleep? What’s that? Although you might manage the essentials—feeding the baby, changing diapers, and maybe even paying a bill—you’re likely not at your best. Mistakes are bound to happen. Recently, a group of my fantastic, understanding mom friends shared some of the most ridiculous things we’ve done when running on empty. Here are nine of the most amusing blunders we’ve encountered due to lack of sleep.

  1. Word Mix-Ups: You might find yourself in a world where you say the opposite of what you mean, like “Okay, see you yesterday!” or “Excuse me, I’m going upstairs to eat the baby.” Asking another mom how old her baby was when born is also a classic.
  2. Shoe Fails: It’s possible to walk out of the house with mismatched shoes, wearing slippers, or even without any shoes at all. Sometimes, you may even choose to attend a meeting in fuzzy bunny slippers without a second thought.
  3. Clothing Confusion: You might head to the store in your pajamas, or struggle to put on a dress, blaming its tightness on weight gain—only to later realize you’ve been wearing it backward this whole time! Or, like I did, you could mistakenly try to wear your five-year-old son’s underpants.
  4. Coffee Catastrophes: Ever run the coffee maker without coffee? Or pour the grinds straight into your cup and wonder why it’s all gritty? You might even forget to turn the machine on, leading to a tearful breakdown.
  5. Sensory Goofs: You could find yourself searching for the baby carrier only to realize you’re already wearing it while holding the baby.
  6. Memory Lapses: Standing in your living room with dental floss in hand, clueless as to why you’re even holding it, is a common occurrence, especially when you gave up on flossing ages ago.
  7. Laundry Blunders: You might toss a load in the washer but forget the soap, or put clothes in the dryer without turning it on. There’s also the infamous incident of washing a bag of groceries, including olive oil and vinegar.
  8. Clock Confusion: When trying to time a feeding, you may stare at the clock, utterly baffled by which way the hands are moving.
  9. Name Mix-Ups: It’s not unusual to call your friends by their kids’ names or mix up your own children’s names. One friend even sang a lullaby to her baby, completely forgetting his name and using someone else’s instead!

As we all know, sleep deprivation can lead to some pretty funny mishaps. Just remember, we’ve all been there.
