9 Fun Activities to Enjoy with My Toddler Now That His Sibling is in School
Since my older son started school last week, I’ve been spending a lot more time with my 2-year-old, Leo. Honestly, I didn’t realize how little I knew this little guy! From the moment he was born, he’s been strapped into a carrier while I juggled the demands of his big brother. Thankfully, Leo is a cheerful and friendly child who rarely complains—likely because I was always so focused on his sibling. But now that my oldest is at school all day, I finally have the chance to bond with Leo. Here’s a look at the nine things we can do together now that his brother is away.
1. Enjoy uninterrupted conversations.
It turns out Leo has a lot to share! I thought he was just a quiet kid, but really, he was being drowned out by his brother.
2. Remember his middle name, which is currently slipping my mind.
3. Explore new foods together.
Poor Leo has had limited choices at mealtime since his brother is quick to declare meals as “yucky.” Turns out, Leo is perfectly fine with sandwiches in any shape.
4. Notice his beautiful blue eyes.
5. Allow him to wake up from naps at his own pace without his brother barging in shouting, “TIME TO GET UP!”
6. Play without interruptions, rather than having superheroes crash our carefully constructed train set.
7. Discover if he has friends of his own.
We went to the park, just the two of us, and I was surprised when he jumped into the sandbox and said, “Hi, Mia!”
8. Ask him who taught him to use a fork.
Somehow, while his brother dominated dinner conversations, Leo learned to navigate utensils all on his own.
9. Give him a bath without being nearly drowned by an overly enthusiastic sibling.
(To be fair, he does his share of splashing too!)
It’s been wonderful to get to know Leo, who patiently hung out in his bouncy seat while I dealt with my older son’s endless questions about snacks or what day of the week it was. Turns out, Leo is pretty amazing and has a lot to say—at least until nap time rolls around.
