Stay-at-Home Parents Deserve Affordable Day Care Too

The discussion around work-life balance is more relevant than ever. With leaders advocating for family leave and improved workplace policies, we’re beginning to recognize the challenges many parents face. One of the biggest hurdles is the exorbitant cost of child care, which often pushes parents, particularly mothers, out of the workforce. As a working parent, I can’t help but long for a child care system like those in Scandinavia or France, where professionals are well-trained, nutritious meals are provided, and costs are subsidized—ensuring no family falls into financial peril while seeking care.

Critics of universal child care argue that the government shouldn’t be involved in “raising children” and that kids thrive best at home with their parents. While I respect differing opinions on family dynamics, one truth stands out from my five years as a stay-at-home parent: we need access to quality, affordable day care as well. I’m not suggesting full-time care—just a few hours here and there at welcoming community centers, similar to open preschools in Sweden. These spaces allow children to play and socialize while parents connect with others, which can be a lifesaver during long winters.

During my early days at home, a place to go would have been a blessing, especially during those chilly months when outdoor play was impossible. I can only imagine the positive impact of such spaces on mental health. American parents often find themselves stuck at libraries or bookstores, where children may disturb others or even damage books. This isolation is particularly challenging for stay-at-home moms, who are statistically more likely to experience depression. A vibrant, clean space for families would alleviate the loneliness and provide a much-needed break.

Additionally, having access to drop-in day care would have made life easier when I needed to run errands or attend appointments. Instead of juggling a toddler in a stroller while trying to keep a baby quiet at the DMV or worrying about a screaming child at a tax office, I could have left them in a safe, engaging environment. Unfortunately, many parents can’t afford regular babysitters, forcing us to bring our kids to places where they’re not always welcome. Imagine how much smoother life would be with subsidized day care available for short periods! It would mean fewer parents missing important medical appointments or skipping necessary follow-ups due to child care challenges.

We can’t expect stay-at-home parents to be available 24/7, 365 days a year, without needing some time away. A low-cost day care center with trained staff would not only benefit parents but would also enrich children’s lives and make outings more pleasant for everyone around.
