Mom Worry: Did I Do Everything Today?
Did I…
- Lock the front door?
- Grab the sippy cup?
- Remember my keys?
- Unplug the straightener?
- Pack the wallet?
- Prepare snacks?
- Include a change of clothes?
I check my pockets for the keys, glance into my bag for the sippy cup, clothes, snacks, and wallet. I hop out of the car to double-check the door. Yep, it’s locked. It’s always locked. I unlock it again, rush to the bathroom, and confirm that the straightener is indeed unplugged. Back to the door I go, locking it once more, only to pause halfway to the car to check the door again. It’s still locked, of course.
Did I…
- Send his shoes?
- Pack his toy cars?
- Text to see how he’s doing?
- Leave his sippy cup in the car?
During my lunch break, I dart to the parking lot to search for shoes, toy cars, and the sippy cup. None in sight—success! I check my phone, realizing I haven’t texted yet. I don’t want to be “that” mom, but I can’t resist. After a bit, I send a message anyway and keep an ear out for that sweet notification sound because, let’s face it, all of us moms are helicopter moms in our own way.
Did I…
- Send that last email?
- Turn off my office light?
- Blow out the candle?
- Notify my boss I’ll be late tomorrow?
I replay the final moments of my workday, imagining myself turning off the light and texting a coworker to check the candle. I hope I sent that email, but I start to dwell on it. After a while, I accept that I’m not sure and plan to check when I get in the next day. I text my boss to remind him I’ll be late.
Did I…
- Check on him in his crib?
- Make sure he was breathing okay?
- Ensure nothing was stuck between the bars?
- Pack his bag for tomorrow?
- Prepare his juice sippy?
- Spend enough time playing with him?
- Kiss him enough?
- Tell him I love him enough?
I tiptoe away from laundry sorting, quietly open his door, and shine a flashlight on his chest to check his breathing. He’s fine, hands above his head and not stuck. Phew! I notice a little foot between the bars, so I tiptoe in and move it to a safer spot. Holding my breath, I watch him shift into a comfier position. I sneak back down the hall and resume sorting laundry.
I reflect on our tickle fest and dancing to “Ring Around the Rosie.” Smiling, I match socks, remembering the kisses I stole while he drifted off to dreamland. I remind myself that as a mom, I always love enough, even when I doubt it. I finish the laundry and lie down in bed, offering up my prayers.
Did I lock the door? Throwing the covers aside, I tiptoe to the living room. Just to be sure, I check the door again. Locked. It’s always locked.
I crawl back into bed, take a deep breath, and try to catch some sleep to gear up for another day of, “Did I…?”
