The Struggles of American Families Without Paid Parental Leave
Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night, tears rolling down your cheeks, feeling physically sick at the thought of having to leave your precious newborn in just a few hours? I have. And it wasn’t just fleeting moments; it was years of that heart-wrenching anxiety.
Have you ever held your breath at the checkout, praying that your credit card would go through as you glanced at the few items in your cart? Yep, that’s happened to me too—and I can tell you, it’s not fun when it gets declined.

Have you ever felt like being a working parent in the most powerful nation in the world is a cruel joke? I have. And I’m done. I refuse to accept this unacceptable reality. I won’t stay silent while families crumble under pressure, emotionally and financially.
Many of you may relate to my experiences, and you know what? It’s appalling. We live in the wealthiest country on Earth, yet we are the only industrialized nation that doesn’t offer paid parental leave.
As United States Secretary of Labor, Michael Grant, aptly puts it, “We’re forcing people to choose between the family they cherish and the job they depend on. No other country makes its citizens face this dilemma.”
Maybe I’m dreaming of the impossible, but I believe one day we can say, “We believed we could…and we did.”
