A Note to My Future Teens About Technology

Hey there, my little ones,

Right now, you’re still quite small—just 18 months and 3 years old—but already, you can navigate the tablet like pros! You belong to a generation that will grow up with technology all around you.

When I was your age, we didn’t have apps to keep us entertained. We made do without cell phones and Wi-Fi. Our home phones were tethered to the wall with cords, and if we needed to make a call away from home, we used these old contraptions called pay phones.

There was no Google or Siri to answer our every question. If we were curious about something, we hit the library, flipping through card catalogs and encyclopedias to hunt down the info we sought.

GPS? Nope! We had to either ask for directions or wrestle with gigantic paper maps that never folded back the same way.

Who knows what technology will look like by the time you read this! Maybe you’ll be too busy dealing with some robot uprising. But I want to share a few thoughts about navigating a world with instant access to everything:

Know When to Unplug

Sure, there will be plenty of time for phones, video games, and binge-watching your favorite shows, but remember, balance is key. You won’t reminisce about that viral post, but the memories you create together will last a lifetime.

Be Present with Each Other

While it’s common for teens to hang out in groups, glued to their screens, don’t forget the importance of real conversations. Practice making eye contact and truly connecting.

Manners Matter

Treat others as you wish to be treated. A smile goes a long way. Don’t forget to say “please” and “thank you” and always strive to be kind and respectful.

Anonymity Isn’t an Excuse

Some people say hurtful things online because it’s easier behind a screen. Remember, whether in person or online, be the type of person you’d want to be around.

Be Your Own Advocate

Steer clear of the negativity that often lurks in comments sections. Stand up for yourself, but also know which battles are worth your energy.

Stay Smart and Safe

Make choices that serve your future well. Be cautious about what you share online, and please, don’t take nude photos—seriously, you never know where they might end up.

Read, Read, Read

Find books you love, especially those made of paper! Reading can ignite a passion within you. Keep searching until you find that magical book that hooks you.

Learn to Write Well

In a world of acronyms and emojis, remember that words are powerful tools. Good spelling, grammar, and vocabulary will help you be taken seriously—so skip the “u” for “you” outside of texts!

Find What Makes Life Special

Explore your creativity! Dive into music, art, and surround yourself with friends who lift you up and make you laugh.

Seek Adventure

Don’t just scroll through pictures—get outside and experience life! Feel the earth beneath your feet and embrace the beauty of the world around you.

Even though answers are just a button away, I hope your curiosity remains strong. Engage with life, cherish experiences, and who knows, perhaps teleportation or flying cars will be a reality by then!

With all my love,
Mom
