These Kids Stumped by a Walkman Will Remind You of Your Age
If you’ve ever seen a toddler deftly swipe through an iPad, you realize just how different today’s kids’ experiences are compared to our own childhood. This amusing video captures a mom’s son and his friend as they try to figure out the mysteries of a Walkman, something that might as well be an ancient artifact to them. Watching them struggle is a little chuckle-worthy, especially since we all probably had one back in the day. But imagine if you’d never encountered it and only knew music in its current digital form.
The kids are completely perplexed, much like we would be if handed a vintage iPod without a clue on how to use it. It’s amusing to see one of them trying to shove the cassette in the wrong way, but it’s understandable given the digital age they’ve always lived in. Just recently, my 8-year-old niece was flipping through my old CD collection, astonished by their very existence. We usually connect our smartphones to the car to jam to Apple Music or Pandora, and use Bluetooth speakers at home. So, she’s probably never witnessed a CD player in action! It’s wild how something once so commonplace is now fading into obsolescence.
CDs and Walkmans aren’t the only relics from our past that seem outdated when compared to today’s gadgets. Remember floppy disks? It’s amusing that the icon for “save” looks like something our kids will never know. And how about landline phones, dial-up internet, or physically renting movies from Blockbuster? The list goes on and on. Unless we face some kind of global catastrophe, our kids will grow up surrounded by technology and conveniences that would’ve seemed unimaginable in our youth.
While there are countless advantages for kids today, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for them. Everything is so accessible now, and I worry it’s impacting their patience and ability to enjoy quiet moments without constant stimulation. Everything they desire is just a swipe or a click away. This definitely shapes a generation that’s different from ours. It’s important to remind them that their lives are quite privileged compared to what we experienced just a few decades ago.

In summary, witnessing kids struggle with outdated technology like the Walkman is a humorous reminder of how far we’ve come. While the conveniences of today’s world offer many benefits, they can also create challenges in patience and appreciation for simpler times.
