Sometimes It’s Tough to Be a Mom

Being a mom can really be a challenge sometimes.

There are days when I run the vacuum cleaner, just to encourage you both to play in your rooms. Other times, I sneak into the kitchen for a secret stash of chocolate after I’ve declared it all gone. Bath nights? Yeah, I’ve definitely skipped a few—okay, maybe more than a few.

Sometimes I find myself covering my mouth and silently expressing frustrations that would make a sailor blush. I’ll say, “Absolutely, let’s play Superhero Squad!” and then, well, life happens, and I never get around to it. There are even occasions when I drive to the Chick-fil-a that’s a bit farther, simply to align with nap time when we get home.

I might tell you I’m watching you closely with “Mom Vision,” but sometimes I’m really just taking a moment to breathe. I’ll tell your dad I’m in the bathroom, but really, I’m just hiding for a moment of peace. I might promise to watch a show with you, only to drift off into dreamland instead. And let’s not even talk about those pretend cookies—you know, the ones I pretend to enjoy but make me want to gag.

Sometimes I say, “Just one minute!” when it actually turns into 20, or I might conveniently misplace your favorite CDs. I admit, I’ve yelled when a polite request would have sufficed. Yet…

Sometimes we play school together, and I genuinely have a blast. Watching you both ride bikes brings a huge smile to my face as you zoom around. We explore nature together, collecting interesting pinecones, and you help me whip up delicious meals in the kitchen. Those moments when I see you both making music together make me want to jump up and dance. Playing Simon Says? Oh, the laughter we share is priceless! Running errands becomes a fun outing, not just a chore, and I cherish those moments of saying a blessing before dinner. Singing loudly in the car just for the joy of it is the best!

Some days I’m cheerful, and others, well, let’s just say I’m a bit cranky. It’s a rollercoaster being your mom—sometimes it’s quite hard, and at times, it feels like a breeze. But through it all, my love for you is unwavering.
