When Moms Start to Sound Like Their Moms
I was out with friends the other night, and I caught myself saying, “Why is the text on this menu so tiny? I might as well have a microscope!” Seriously, what’s up with the dim lighting? It feels like they don’t want you to order anything at all. Yup, it’s official: I’m morphing into my mother.
We all know the feeling: one moment you’re just living your life, and the next, you’re exclaiming, “It’s so noisy in here, I can’t even think!” My mom had her go-to phrases that used to drive me up the wall, and now I find myself saying them. Just the other day, I told my kids their room was a “complete disaster zone.” Not my proudest moment, but it’s hard not to relate to the new video about the transformation into our mothers.
The Mom Chronicles
Laurel, Megan, and Rachel — the creative minds behind the YouTube channel, The Mom Chronicles — have perfectly captured this phenomenon. All three are writers and comedians based in LA, and of course, they’re moms. They met in Chicago doing improv before any of them had kids and eventually decided to join forces to create relatable content.
Megan is navigating life with her three-year-old son, Laurel has an almost two-year-old son, and Rachel’s juggling a two-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old stepdaughter. Their shared parenting experiences lead to some seriously funny material. “Our ideas usually come straight from our daily mom lives,” Rachel shared with enthusiasm. “One of us might mention a struggle or a new phase we’re dealing with, and suddenly it sparks an idea for a video.” They’ve crafted over 50 videos, covering everything from debates on what “sleeping through the night” means to a rap about the wild things that occur post-birth, and even heartfelt discussions about episodes of kids’ shows.
They’re the kind of mom friends we all wish we had — the ones who remind us we’re not alone in this wild journey. While I could’ve done without the reminder of my own transformation into my mother, it’s undeniably hilarious and relatable.
