About Us
At Family Equality, we have been champions for LGBTQ+ families since 1979. Our mission is to create a world where everyone can thrive in communities and access services that affirm their identities. We engage in policy advocacy at federal, state, and local levels to ensure that current and future LGBTQ+ families can live freely and authentically.
Our Policy Focus
Our advocacy is centered on three key areas: child welfare, family formation and protection, and education.
- Child Welfare
It is essential that every youth and family has access to safe and supportive child welfare services. Discrimination within the child welfare system has significant consequences for the hundreds of thousands of children in foster care, their families, and prospective foster and adoptive parents—especially those from LGBTQ+ and other marginalized backgrounds. We collaborate with individuals who have firsthand experience in foster care, social workers, and policymakers to advocate for the best interests of children in these systems. - Family Formation and Protection
Every person should have the right to create and expand their family in a way that feels right to them. Whether through adoption, foster care, or assisted reproduction, Family Equality is dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all families. We focus on promoting legislation that ensures access to assisted reproduction services and protects legal parent-child relationships. - Education
Every child deserves access to a free, safe, and inclusive education that recognizes diverse family structures. Unfortunately, many students with LGBTQ+ parents encounter mistreatment in schools. We oppose legislation that erases LGBTQ+ topics from curricula and advocate for inclusive policies that protect against discrimination and bullying. Expanding Our Efforts
We are committed to amplifying the voices and experiences of diverse LGBTQ+ families, particularly those from BIPOC communities, through our Family Equity and Justice Project. This initiative involves conducting research and conversations that highlight the unique challenges and joys these families face regarding family formation, education, healthcare, and more.
Recent Achievements
As we continue to make strides in policy advocacy, we celebrate our recent successes, such as the passing of New Mexico’s confirmatory adoption bill, which strengthens protections for LGBTQ+ families.
