What’s Going On With My Toddlers?
Ah, the joys of parenting! As I crouch down, mopping up the water my 2 and 3-year-olds have spilled from their cups—again—my mind races with the same thought: “What on earth is wrong with you two?” It’s a recurring theme of my day, as I wrestle to keep my frustration in check. The last thing I want is for my chatty 3-year-old to trot into her preschool and exclaim, “What on earth is wrong with you?” to her teacher. That would surely land me on the top of the prayer list for “Parents in Need of Guidance and Grace.
But seriously, what is up with toddlers?
When my 2-year-old arches his back and wails like he’s being tortured while I strap him into his car seat, I can’t help but think, “What on earth is wrong with you?” And then there’s the time I entered a room to find a diaper-less toddler, hand covered in poop, creating his own version of a feces masterpiece on my white wall. My eyes nearly popped out of my head—I mean, really, what is going on here?
Then there’s my 3-year-old, proudly singing from the bathroom after going potty “all by herself.” I walk in to discover her squatting in a puddle of pee beside the toilet. I can feel my hair thinning as I suppress the urge to scream, “What on earth is wrong with you?!”
I often wonder how these little beings can turn my house into a whirlwind of chaos. My jeans are starting to fade at the knees from all the time I spend on them, cleaning up endless messes.
Initially, I thought it was just my kids—maybe they inherited a “chaotic gene” or I drank too much caffeine during pregnancy. But after spending time with other toddlers, I’ve realized they all have their own “What on earth?” moments. It seems to be a universal toddler trait, one that leaves us parents scratching our heads in bewilderment.
I consider myself a fairly resourceful person; I’ve navigated the challenges of parenting two under two while managing postpartum depression and somehow retained my sanity. I’d like to think of myself as a parenting veteran. Yet, despite all my skills, I still haven’t cracked the code on what’s going on with toddlers. Perhaps it’s just one of those life puzzles that will remain unsolved. Maybe one day, a scientist will uncover the truth. Until then, I’ll continue to ponder what exactly is going on with these little whirlwinds, several times a day.
