7 Surprising Facts About Lactation Consultants
I’m a lactation consultant now, but my journey began as a mother. Before I even understood what a lactation consultant truly did, I was just a new mom eager to breastfeed my little one. I had no clue about the so-called Mommy Wars or the judgment that often surrounds breastfeeding and formula-feeding. All I knew was that I wanted to nurse my son, and boy, was it tough! He simply wouldn’t latch. Each time I brought my breast close, he turned away as if I were offering him spoiled milk. I was crushed, feeling like a failure and disconnected from my baby.
My desire to breastfeed stemmed from a deep instinct rather than a societal obligation. The morning after his birth, the wonderful doulas who supported me arrived to assist. They gently helped my squirming son latch onto my breast, combining warmth and practical guidance. They stuck around until I could manage it on my own, but it took several weeks for us to find our rhythm.
Curiously, when I inquired if they were lactation consultants, they chuckled and said, “No, you need like 2,000 hours of boobs to do that.” They were spot on. To become a lactation consultant, I had to log 2,000 hours of one-on-one time with breastfeeding mothers, take college-level science courses, and complete specialized breastfeeding training. Just like breastfeeding my son, it was a calling I felt compelled to answer.
Years later, as I continue my work—especially in an age where moms connect online—I’ve noticed that not every mother’s experience with lactation support is as uplifting as mine. Some have reported feeling pressured to breastfeed by their consultants or feeling unheard. The most common issue I hear is that mothers have felt shamed when they decided to stop breastfeeding for any reason.
Like any profession, there are always some who might not deliver care with the necessary compassion. However, that’s more the exception than the rule among lactation consultants. It’s also crucial to note that there’s a spectrum of breastfeeding supporters out there—from casual volunteers to lactation counselors who’ve just completed a weekend course. The real deal? Those with the title “IBCLC”—board-certified lactation consultants who have undergone rigorous training and amassed countless hours of experience.
Let’s debunk some common myths about lactation consultants:
- We Don’t Dislike Formula. Sure, we acknowledge the health benefits of breast milk, but if a mom can’t produce enough milk or can’t access donated milk, we see formula as a perfectly acceptable alternative. When a baby is underweight, our priority is to ensure they’re fed, even if that means using formula while helping the mom boost her milk supply.
- We Understand Milk Production Isn’t Always Simple. We’re well aware that some mothers face challenges with milk production. Whether it’s due to physical differences or babies who struggle to latch, we don’t judge; we aim to help moms achieve their milk supply goals, should they wish to pursue them.
- We Care Deeply About Your Journey. It might sound cliché, but we genuinely care. We think about our clients constantly, knowing how important successful breastfeeding can be for them.
- We Respect Personal Choices. Some women choose not to breastfeed for deeply personal reasons—be it past trauma, incompatible medications, or simply personal preference. We’re here to support you, not to pass judgment. Your choices are yours alone.
- We Empower You to Make Informed Decisions. Many mothers give up on breastfeeding due to a lack of information. We strive to provide tailored guidance so you can make the best decision for yourself and your baby. Information leads to empowerment!
- We’ve Seen It All. From countless breasts and babies to bleeding nipples and dirty diapers, we’ve witnessed it all. So, feel free to drop any modesty around us. But, we totally understand if you prefer to keep things private for any reason.
- We Support Your Goals—Whatever They Are. Whether you want to breastfeed exclusively, mix in a bottle of formula, or breastfeed for a specific duration, we’re here to support your goals. It’s your body and your baby—your choices matter!
Many lactation consultants, including those I’ve trained with, began their journeys just like me—moms who faced breastfeeding hurdles and wanted to help others navigate the same path. Our mission is to equip mothers with knowledge and compassion, helping them achieve their breastfeeding goals.
