“They’re Just Little, Tipsy Beasts”: Jamie Lawson Reveals the Real Deal About Parenting
May 6, 2023
“Modern Living” star Jamie Lawson perfectly captures the reality of raising young kids.
Jamie Lawson isn’t just playing a mom on screen; she’s also a mother to three energetic little boys in real life. Portraying the character of Claire Dunphy on “Modern Living,” Jamie’s comical take on parenting seems to mirror her real-life experiences. In a recent chat, she shared her relatable take on the wild ride of motherhood.
Speaking with Today, Lawson opened up about her daily life with her sons—Oliver, 9, and twins Gus and Jake, 6. She mentioned the many chaotic “morning rush” scenes in “Modern Living,” where Claire is seen preparing breakfast and getting the kids ready for school. Reflecting on her early days as a parent, she joked, “When I first started, my morning rush looked a lot different. Now? It’s a whole new level of difficulty!”
“I honestly don’t get why getting three boys to put their shoes on feels like asking them to climb Mount Everest. You’d think I was asking them to launch a NASA shuttle!” Ain’t that the truth? Just put. Them. On.
When discussing how motherhood has transformed her life, Lawson hit the nail on the head about the unexpected challenges of parenting. “I’ve never been a great cook, and I’m constantly shocked when these three little beings look at me and ask, ‘What’s for breakfast? What’s for dinner?’ It dawns on me, ‘Oh right, feeding you is my responsibility!’”
Parenting is a hilarious journey. Whether you used to enjoy cooking or not, you certainly don’t magically become a culinary expert after having kids. You need to learn how to prepare meals for these tiny humans who rely on you to grow.
Luckily, Jamie received some sage advice from her sister, who reminded her that kids don’t arrive “at age five” and that there’s time to figure out meal prep. “You start with breast milk and gradually move on. It’s a process, and kids practically live on beige food,” she quipped.
So true! Goldfish crackers, cheese sticks, chicken nuggets, and Cheerios—those staples never fail. I might just create a laminated card with that advice to hand out to new parents!
On the subject of her evolving relationship with her boys, Jamie offered an amusing, yet oddly fitting analogy. “It feels like I have three boyfriends and a husband. It’s like I’m married and juggling these three little relationships.” She elaborated that there are moments when they ignore her or shy away from affection, while at other times, they’re all over her. “It’s like being a teenager wondering, ‘Why is he calling me all the time? Or not at all?’”
A little odd? Perhaps, but it makes sense in the chaotic world of parenting.
When it comes to being humbled by her kids, even a well-known and humorous mom like Jamie finds herself grounded. “It’s funny; my kids don’t think I’m particularly funny. But that’s their job—to keep me feeling slightly insecure about everything I’ve ever thought about myself.”
Though they may not shower her with compliments, she holds them in high regard, as all mothers do. However, she also recognizes the chaos they bring into her life. “They often forget to flush the toilet or leave their backpacks at home as if they don’t realize that’s part of the daily routine.” As she brilliantly puts it, “They’re incredibly sophisticated yet they’re just tiny, tipsy beasts who don’t know what’s happening half the time.”
Nailed it!
