8 Lessons Learned from an Hour of Yelling
A colleague of mine recently sent me a delightful article about a mother who whispered for an entire week and how transformative it was. Was she subtly hinting at something? Inspired by writer Vanessa Bell’s musings on how we reach a boiling point and end up yelling at our kids, I resolved to try whispering for a week as well. She discovered that lowering her voice led to better focus, fewer tantrums, and a generally happier household. However, just as I was gearing up for this experiment, the universe had different plans for me.
Enter the loud gardener armed with a leaf blower. My mom, who’s already a bit hard of hearing, couldn’t quite catch my gentle request to feed the baby lunch. After a few attempts, I realized she was looking at me as if I’d lost my mind. “Are you whispering? Why are you whispering?” she asked, baffled. So, I decided to raise my voice for an hour and see what happened.
Here’s what I discovered during my yelling spree:
- The leaf blower became less annoying—my own shouts drowned it out, a definite win.
- The look of bewilderment on an infant’s face while I yelled at the world while breastfeeding was quite amusing.
- Kids find yelling entertaining—especially when you’re not yelling at them but rather with them.
- Yelling actually boosted my energy levels. It felt a bit like chanting during yoga, but let’s be real, that’s a stretch.
- It served as a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminding me of the confusion on my Anglo classmates’ faces when they visited my boisterous Greek/Italian family.
- My coworkers now think every message I send is crucial and respond immediately.
- My mother looked a tad concerned and might just offer me some of her Xanax.
- I sort of felt like I had hit the gym—who knew yelling could be such a workout?

In summary, while I didn’t quite achieve the calm whispering I intended, my hour of yelling taught me a lot about energy, humor, and the joy of connecting with my kids—even if it was at a decibel level that could raise the dead.
