A Compassionate Adventure List for My Children

As my kids step into their teenage years and prepare for college, my aspirations for them remain as vibrant and ambitious as when they were first starting preschool. However, the focus of those dreams has shifted from traditional milestones—like financial stability and advanced degrees—to meaningful experiences that can truly transform their lives.

Like many young people today, they have their own bucket list filled with thrilling escapades—think exotic trips, swimming with sharks, and conquering the Appalachian Trail. But my version of a bucket list for them is different. It’s filled with acts of kindness, courage, and unforgettable moments that could be just as impactful—if not more—than trying to leap from an airplane. I call it their compassion adventure list. Here are some experiences I hope they’ll check off more than once throughout their lives:

  1. Stand up against bullying, even if it means defending someone they don’t know.
  2. Advocate for the elderly who are being mistreated or exploited.
  3. Greet a war veteran with a heartfelt, “Thank you for my freedom.”
  4. Pay for someone’s groceries when they’re struggling at the checkout.
  5. Serve Thanksgiving dinner to those in need, opting for pizza instead of a lavish feast at home.
  6. Offer someone their first real job opportunity.
  7. Babysit for anxious first-time parents to give them a break.
  8. Support the free speech and religious rights of someone with whom they strongly disagree.
  9. Dedicate an entire vacation to volunteer work.
  10. Coach a youth sports team before they have kids of their own.
  11. Pay off a family’s Christmas layaway for toys.
  12. Assist a stranded driver with a flat tire.
  13. Mow a neighbor’s overgrown lawn as a kind gesture.
  14. Help a friend escape an unhealthy relationship.
  15. Give a tired caregiver some well-deserved rest, even when they feel drained themselves.
  16. Offer your prime seat to a soldier, a pregnant woman, or someone with a disability.
  17. Let flustered individuals cut in front of you in line—often!
  18. Leave generous tips, especially for those working the night shift.
  19. Show appreciation with thoughtful gifts to the cleaning staff at work and at home.
  20. Call aging parents just to check in and say “Hello.”
  21. Sing at a nursing home for some joy and cheer.
  22. Always do the right thing without seeking permission.
  23. Don’t hoard wealth—invest in experiences and people.
  24. Honor someone’s final wishes, no matter how challenging.

Imagine a world where people traded their dreams of skydiving for a commitment to these types of acts. What a beautiful place that would be.
