In a heartwarming twist of nostalgia, a grandpa in California has transformed his backyard into a magical “Disneyland” to entice his grandkids to visit more often. And let’s just say, it’s a place that could put any theme park to shame!
Meet Carl Jenkins
Meet Carl Jenkins, a 68-year-old retired aerospace engineer from Fullerton, who has been a Disney enthusiast since childhood. “Growing up just two miles away from Disneyland, I watched it come to life on my bike,” Carl reminisced. “My friend’s brother worked the gate and would let us sneak in during the slow summer days. It felt like my own backyard!”
Welcome to Jenkinsland
Fast forward to today, and Carl’s grandkids are creating their own cherished memories at his whimsical haven, aptly named Jenkinsland. This backyard wonderland features a 100-foot-long roller coaster, a “Sleeping Beauty” castle, and even a ride called “Winnie-the-Poof.” “My younger grandkids are crazy about Disneyland, and I wanted to give them a reason to come to my house,” Carl explained. “It’s tough to compete with the magic of Disney!”
The Inspiration Behind Jenkinsland
The inspiration for Jenkinsland struck about eight years ago when Carl realized he couldn’t keep the kids entertained for more than half an hour. “He wanted to spark their imaginations,” said his daughter, Melissa. Using cardboard, he crafted mini pirate ships and ping pong shooters for a homemade “Pirates of the Caribbean”-themed adventure. From there, the ideas just kept flowing. “I don’t think he ever envisioned building a theme park, but as more grandkids arrived, it just became magical,” Melissa added.
Building the Jenkins Coaster
Still teaching at California State Polytechnic University, Carl enlisted his students to help him build the “Jenkins Coaster,” a PVC-piped ride that reaches speeds of up to 12 miles per hour. “He even got it certified as a legit roller coaster!” Melissa shared. “He’s always dreamed of building a ride at Disneyland, so why not do it in his backyard for his grandkids?”
The Joy of Creation
The kids adore it, naturally. “They see him as the most creative person ever,” Melissa noted. “He didn’t do this for himself. It’s pure joy watching them enjoy it, and that’s just precious.”
Expanding Jenkinsland
And just like any good theme park, Jenkinsland is constantly expanding. Carl is working on new attractions, including spinning teacups, an airplane learning station, and a “Finding Nemo”-inspired submarine. “It’s dark inside and glows,” Melissa added, her excitement palpable.
When Can We Book Tickets?
So, when can we book our tickets to Jenkinsland? Well, we’ll just have to keep an eye out for the grand opening!
