What I Want My Child To Know As School Starts Again
Dear Little One,
Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new adventure — the first day of second grade! I know you’re not overly excited about heading back to school. You’d much prefer to be outside playing baseball with your friends, sorting through your epic collection of sports cards, or diving into the pool one more time for the millionth splash.
I get it. You’d rather be engrossed in a movie filled with superheroes and magical worlds, exploring the wonders of nature in the backyard, or racing your bike down the street while enjoying a popsicle. Summer has been a blast, hasn’t it? But as the saying goes, time waits for no one, and it’s time to embrace a new season filled with learning and growth.
Before we dive into this school year, let me share a few important insights that you should always keep close to your heart.
1. The Superheroes Around You
First, the world is full of superheroes, and they aren’t limited to comic books or films. They walk among us, shopping at Target or driving in their cars. You, my dear, are fortunate to spend time with a real superhero every day: your teacher. She wears a cape of patience and brings a bag of magical lessons that teach you about math, science, reading, and kindness.
Remember, being a superhero isn’t just about battling villains. It’s about making a positive impact, and your teachers do just that. So, be respectful, listen well, and support them in their important work. When you do, you not only empower them but also become a superhero yourself.
2. Facing Challenges
Second, when challenges arise — and they will — remember that a few deep breaths can work wonders. You’re an energetic, friendly, and kind soul, but you also feel things deeply, just like me. There will be times when life feels overwhelming, whether it’s a tricky math problem, hurt feelings, or feeling alone.
In those moments, take a deep breath and remember that you are never alone. Your dad and I are always right there with you, supporting you in spirit. Even if it’s as small as a piece of lint in your pocket, our love is always with you. So when things get tough, breathe deeply, trust your heart, and know we’re cheering you on.
3. Embrace Your Magic
Lastly, here’s the most crucial secret: that magic you felt this summer isn’t going anywhere. It’s within you! You are your own source of magic. You don’t have to be the best version of anyone else; you just need to be the best version of yourself. It’s a journey, but remember to breathe, listen to your heart, and draw from our love and support. When you do, you’ll spread that magic to others, enabling them to discover their own magic.
So don’t worry! Second grade is going to be an incredible experience. You’ll learn new things and meet more superheroes along the way. Be kind, be a good listener, and be a friend. And of course, when you come home, tell me all about your day. Not a moment goes by that I’m not thinking of you and wishing you all the best.
With love,
Mom
