20 Reasons Shedding Baby Weight is a Challenge
As moms, we often put too much pressure on ourselves regarding the delicate issue of post-baby weight loss. Especially when our little ones are now pre-teens, and we can still grab a handful of our waistlines. But let’s be real, there are solid reasons why those extra pounds linger long after our kiddos have arrived. I prefer to call them reasons; those fit moms flaunting abs on Instagram might label them “excuses.” Tomato, tomahto. Here’s why:
- Your body undergoes a transformation: Having a baby literally reshapes your body. Wider hips and a larger pelvis are just part of the deal. Thanks, kiddos!
- Setting an example: When we ask our children to finish their meals, we need to practice what we preach. How can they take our guilt trips seriously if we’re not eating our greens?
- Cupcake dilemma: Who can resist the temptation to finish off a cupcake, even if it’s just the frosting left?
- Endless chicken nuggets: They’re a constant at every meal, and who doesn’t sneak a few?
- Exhaustion sets in: After a full day of mom duties, the couch becomes our best friend, and exercising feels like a Herculean task.
- Fast food allure: After a long day of work and parenting, drive-thrus become an appealing shortcut.
- Avoiding “yucky” food complaints: Sometimes, just to enjoy a peaceful meal, pizza is the go-to option.
- Sitting around: We spend countless hours in waiting rooms or at school events, contemplating exercises that would make us look silly in public.
- Diet vs. family meals: It’s challenging to stick to a kale smoothie diet when you’re preparing hearty meals for the family.
- Sweet escapes: Sneaking away for a moment with a candy bar in the closet can be a much-needed sanity saver.
- Birthday treat testing: We naturally sample whatever treats we bake or buy for our kids’ birthday parties.
- Candy safety checks: Halloween means quality control for all that candy, and of course, we have to help out.
- Caloric wine: Let’s face it, sometimes our favorite wine isn’t exactly low-calorie.
- Skipping breakfast: Mornings are chaotic, so we often skip breakfast only to overindulge later, convincing ourselves it’s okay since we missed the first meal.
- Ice cream therapy: An outing to the ice cream shop can be a perfect remedy for our kids’ bad days.
- Food waste guilt: When kids leave food uneaten, it feels like throwing money away, so we step in to finish it.
- Supportive moms: When our kids sell treats for fundraisers, it’s hard not to help out by buying a few boxes (or more).
- Cuddle comfort: Extra squishiness is just cozier for cuddling with our little ones.
- Purse snacks: There’s always some sort of treat stashed in our bags for those “emergency” moments.
- Rejecting unrealistic standards: We won’t hold ourselves to the unattainable ideals of celebrities who bounce back into their pre-baby bodies just days after birth.
The slightly squishy truth is that we shouldn’t feel ashamed of not fitting into our pre-baby jeans. The baby weight is a natural part of motherhood, and it takes time to adjust. After all, it takes nine months to gain it and often a lifetime to lose it—no rush! So, pass me that plate; those leftovers aren’t going to finish themselves!
