Back-to-School Parenting Promises: A Fresh Start

As parents, we all know that kids pick up on what we model, from our actions to our words. I often share this insight with parents and educators, but when it comes to practicing what I preach, that’s another story. Between my full-time job as a pediatric occupational therapist, managing three kids aged 6 to 8, whipping up dinner, spending quality time with my partner, and sneaking in some writing, I feel like I’m juggling a circus act!

Something’s gotta give, right? After a hectic day at work or when my kids come home cranky from school, I sometimes find it tempting to let my parenting duties slide. But as we gear up for the new school year, I’m hitting the reset button. I’ve put together my own “Mommy Resolutions” to kick off this year right, even though it’s not January or any holiday that rings a bell. I’m sharing these commitments for all the parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists out there—because let’s face it, we all need a little reminder sometimes. This list is as much for me as it is for you, and as soon as I wrap this up, it’s going on my fridge for daily motivation.

To my kiddos, here’s what I promise:

  1. I won’t scroll through social media or check my texts when we’re having dedicated time together. It’s playtime, after all!
  2. No matter how drained I feel after work, I’ll take a deep breath, shake off the stress, and greet you with a smile. You’ve had a long day too!
  3. When we hit the park or the backyard, I’ll be right there with you on the slide or the swings if you want me to join.
  4. I’ll do my best to avoid saying “I’m too busy.” I want you to always know I’m here for you whenever you need me.
  5. Let’s aim for a weekly dance party— keeping it realistic, of course!
  6. Even with my job during the day, I’ll strive to be present for your plays, graduations, and parties. You are my priority.
  7. If I mess up, I’ll look you in the eyes and apologize. I’ll also show you I’m sorry through my actions, just as I advise you to do.
  8. I’ll remind you that I love you every single day and share all the reasons why as often as I can.
  9. I’ll take time to appreciate every smile, giggle, and even those tantrums—because you’re growing up way too fast.
  10. I’ll make sure each of you wakes up and goes to sleep knowing you are special, cherished, and loved to the moon and back.

In summary, as we approach the new school year, I’m committing to being more present and intentional as a parent. I hope these resolutions resonate with you and inspire you to reflect on your own parenting journey.
