However, the students are not causing chaos; they’re simply sitting down. Through this quiet resistance, they’re highlighting the country’s complacency toward the violence that often affects people of color from those meant to protect them.
Opponents of the protests often argue for respect towards America’s greatness. Yet, what makes America truly great is our right to express our views, challenge our government, and protest injustices. These students embody the very essence of American freedom, as do those who hold opposing views. If we were to force these students to stand with their hands on their hearts, how would we differ from nations that suppress their citizens’ freedoms?
It’s perfectly valid to think that these students are misguided or heroic for their stance. Peaceful protest is one of our most valued rights, and we ought to encourage our children to engage in it rather than suppress them. If our goal is to nurture independent thinkers who will contribute positively to society, we should champion these kids rather than silence them.
