This summer, my kids discovered the art of sleeping in, and let me tell you, it was a game changer. They woke up cheerful and well-rested, and so did I! I quickly learned that happy, well-rested kids not only have better moods but also play together more harmoniously—and, best of all, they left me alone for longer stretches. As a work-at-home mom, this was a slice of heaven. I was able to churn out my writing daily, and life was blissful until the first week of August hit me like a ton of bricks: school was looming, complete with its rigid schedules and the dreaded homework.
So, here’s my official apology to summer: I take back every mean thing I’ve muttered about you. You truly are a magnificent force, with your lazy days and spontaneous trips to the pool. I regret criticizing your free-wheeling nature and your beautiful chaos. I’m sincerely sorry for our past quarrels. Please, forgive me.
Here are some reasons why our summer detox has been a reality in my household:
- Back-to-School Whirlwind
We don’t get a gentle transition into the back-to-school chaos. One moment, we’re splashing around in the pool, and the next, we’re thrown into Back-to-School Night, PTA ice cream socials, soccer practices, and homework. It’s overwhelming, especially after weeks of wearing flip-flops! - The End of Sleeping In
Did I mention my kids finally started sleeping in? I’ve been waiting for this miracle for a decade. Yes, ten long years of early mornings are finally over—at least for the summer! - Forgotten Morning Routines
My son seems utterly bewildered by the morning routine. It’s as if he’s been hit by a shockwave at the thought of getting ready before noon. “Maybe you should put on some socks?” I suggest, and he stares blankly, as if I’m speaking Martian. - The Clothing Crisis
Now that they have to wear actual pants and possibly a light jacket, my kids are struggling with the sheer volume of fabric in their lives. It’s a real dilemma! - Lists Galore
I now have lists that require their own lists. There’s clothing shopping, school supplies, haircuts, lunch snacks, new backpacks, and—oh wait—did we just run out of grocery money for the week? - Goodbye, Lazy Afternoons
No more lazy afternoons of fun; now it’s soccer, dance practice, homework, and a never-ending cycle of laundry to deal with. - Farewell, Movie Nights
Those cozy late-night movie marathons are on hold. Now, we must rise early to get the kids to school, all in the name of being “responsible adults.” - Cranky Family Vibes
Let’s be honest: my family doesn’t handle change well. We may put on brave faces, but inside, we’d prefer to hide under the covers and wish the chaos away. So, crankiness it is. Sorry, world!
For all the families taking those picture-perfect back-to-school snapshots while secretly mourning summer’s end, I feel your pain. Here’s to hoping our kids remember the joys of sleeping in when Christmas break rolls around!

Summary:
Summer provided a much-needed break from the chaos of daily routines, bringing joy and rest to my family. However, as school approaches, the transition back to schedules, responsibilities, and crankiness begins, making us long for those lazy summer days.
