The Whimsical Thoughts of a 4-Year-Old Getting Dressed

Wow! I had the best sleep ever! I did wake up Mom like five times, though, because those spooky shadows were pretending to be monsters in my room. I totally knew they were just the moonlight playing tricks through my curtains, but I figured she might miss me. When she hugged me that last time, I could tell I was right. She really needs me; otherwise, her nights would be so lonely!

I had this awesome dream about a bear and swings, all inside a crooked house. I can’t wait to take three hours to tell my parents all about it. They just love hearing me talk, and I love talking, too! I have so many important things to say and songs to sing. Let’s start now!

Today is my first day of preschool, and I have to look super fabulous! No way am I wearing that dress Mom left on the dresser. It was nice in the store, but now it feels all sad and I think I can smell her hopes on it. Eww! Plus, she knows I don’t like blue since yesterday.

But guess what? I found the perfect outfit! Today is so special it deserves wings, gloves, a crown, and all of my hair barrettes at once. Oh, and my Christmas dress and snow boots too, because why not?

This outfit sparkles, and I’m all about the sparkles! It twirls, and I love twirling. I feel like a princess, and it’s like all my dreams are coming true! I bet fairies cried glittery tears to make it, and unicorns are totally jealous of me!

Now, I’m going to make a grand entrance down the stairs like a real princess at a magical ball—because that’s what I am!

Whoa, Mom looks kinda rough this morning. I should probably tell her, so she can fix it before next time. And she looks like she might have a baby in her tummy. I’ll mention this later when we’re in the grocery store.

She’s not fancy at all; I feel bad for her. She always wears black jeans and those old, ugly sneakers, even though I’ve seen those bright red high-heeled shoes in her closet. When I grow up and become a mommy, I’m going to wear ball gowns, wedding dresses, and red high heels every day! I will never let my dreams of being a beautiful fairy lady die. Or maybe I’ll be a mermaid. I saw a mermaid once, and she was super sparkly!

Finally, Dad notices me standing on the stairs. I’m smiling shyly like, “Oh! I didn’t see you there, Mom and Dad. But since you’re here, you should admire my glorious presence!” They’re looking at me kinda funny.

Mom says, “You look very, um, colorful?” She looks tired when she says that. “Are you ever going to wear that new dress, or should I take it back to the store?” Hmm, the new dress did look magical hanging up. I can tell by her look that I need to choose my words wisely.

“Maybe tomorrow?” I say, and then I start twirling.
