In a sad turn of events, Adam Yauch Park, a beloved playground in Brooklyn Heights named after the late Beastie Boys member, was found vandalized with swastikas and hate-filled messages on Friday morning. But the very next day, local kids decided to take matters into their own hands and respond in the most heartwarming way possible— with love.

As NPR reports, these young heroes covered the graffiti with pink hearts and positive messages, including a famous quote from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony acceptance speech: “Love is love is love is love is love…” They even created a sign declaring that the playground’s train “stops fascists.” Talk about a powerful statement against hate!

This incident is sadly just one of many hate crimes that have surfaced in the wake of the Trump election, which he has barely addressed— aside from telling people to “stop it” during a recent interview. Thankfully, the future generation isn’t waiting for someone on TV to tell them what’s right or wrong; they’re stepping up to fight back against hate with love.

Kids have a unique way of showing us how to combat negativity, don’t they? Their instinct is to transform something dark and hurtful into something beautiful and uplifting. Living in Brooklyn myself, I can’t help but feel proud of these children who took back their park with their joyful messages. The name Adam Yauch might not ring a bell for them, but he was a cherished Brooklynite and an advocate for human rights—a fact that sadly seems lost on the vandals who couldn’t even get the swastikas right. Such a shame!

Kudos to the kids for reclaiming their space with creativity and hope. You can join them, along with local leaders and even a member of the Beastie Boys, at a “Stand Up Against Hate” rally in the park today at 11:30 a.m.
