8 Self-Gifts I’m Embracing This Holiday Season
The holiday season is upon us, and as my kids start inquiring about what I’d like, it feels like a loaded question. A more enlightened mom might graciously respond, “Oh, I don’t really need anything,” or “You all are my greatest gift!” Who are these mythical beings? Clearly, they’re not your everyday mom frantically racing around like a reindeer on a mission, trying to keep the peace while her kids argue over who gets the last Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch.
I, however, have a substantial wish list, featuring items like a lavish cashmere wrap I spotted in the Neiman Marcus catalog—just past the elegant golf carts. The reality is that my kids would need to save their allowance for two years to afford that, and while there are more attainable goodies on my list, they seem more inclined to gift me a coupon book for chores or yet another adorable mug declaring me “Best Mom Ever.”
Don’t get me wrong; I cherish the handprints on craft paper, the cracked rainbow candle I can’t light, and the macaroni necklace that’s practically ancient. But there are a few treats I’d like that my family just won’t think to get me. So, here’s my list of gifts I’m giving myself this season:
- Unlimited Peppermint Mochas
While everyone else is clamoring for Pumpkin Spice Lattes, I’m all about the peppermint mocha—yes, with whipped cream! This year, I’m indulging in them as often as my heart desires. Nothing fuels the hunt for that elusive Hatchimal like a caffeine boost! - Sipping My Coffee While It’s Hot
Is it too much to ask to finish my morning coffee before it turns lukewarm? One of my kids always seems to need something urgent—like breakfast. This year, I’m declaring breakfast a self-serve affair. Those gingerbread cookies from the swap? Perfectly acceptable! - Chair Massages
You know those chair massage stations in stores? I’ve decided to treat myself. A short, blissful session of neck kneading may not be a spa day, but it’s a delightful indulgence nonetheless. - Fresh Underwear
I could always use new underwear, but somehow it never makes it to my gift list. I guess I’ll have to venture out to buy my favorite animal-print pairs. #Winning - New Fragrance
Listen, never let your kids pick your perfume. You’ll end up with a scent that screams “birthday party gone wrong.” I’ll stick to picking my own—time to find that perfect scent! - Control of the Car Radio
December is officially “Mom’s Music Month.” I’ll play whatever I want, whether it’s holiday tunes or my cherished ’80s rock anthems. If they don’t like it, they can listen to my Spotify instead! - Binge-Watching Netflix
I’m diving into those shows I’ve missed—like The Crown and Gilmore Girls. For the next three weeks, I’ll be barricaded in my room, earbuds in and door shut. If anyone asks, I’ll say I’m busy wrapping gifts. - Takeout Nights
Less time in the kitchen means more time for Netflix. So yes, we’re having pizza again, kids! Think of it as a pre-Hanukkah treat.
By the time I’m done pampering myself, my wish list will be all checked off. I wonder what my kids will surprise me with this year? Maybe just one more coffee mug with their handprints.
