Photographer Showcases Modern Moms and Challenges Outdated Stereotypes
Mia Thompson is on a mission to redefine what it means to be a mom through her stunning photography. After becoming a mother 11 years ago, she quickly realized she didn’t conform to the traditional “mom” stereotype. “When I dropped my kids off at daycare, I felt out of place. The other moms were older, and I often heard comments like, ‘You’re so young to be a mom’ or ‘You don’t really look like one,’” Mia shared with Upworthy. “I always found it strange that there’s a specific look for moms.”
At just 23 years old, Mia faced the harsh judgments of societal norms. Fast forward to today, she’s using her lens to celebrate the diversity of motherhood. Her project, aptly titled “Unconventional,” highlights moms who express their individuality through tattoos, piercings, bold hair colors, and unique fashion choices. The aim? To shatter the preconceived notions surrounding motherhood.
Mia explained, “I know many mothers who don’t fit the typical mold, and I wanted to capture their beauty and spirit. You don’t have to wear a certain outfit or have a specific hairstyle to be a great mom.” Her work confronts hasty judgments about a mother’s appearance, reminding us that love and care come in all shapes and styles.
It’s 2016, and while tattoos have become more common, they still carry a stigma in some circles. Many people, including parents, tend to judge others based on their looks, which is not only unfair but also limiting. We’re all just trying to embrace our true selves while raising our kids.
“I wanted to showcase women—moms—who don’t lose their personal flair,” Mia said. “Motherhood can sometimes overshadow individuality, but these women prove you can be both a fabulous mom and stay true to yourself.”
Interestingly, a 2015 Harris poll revealed that nearly half of millennials report having at least one tattoo. As a mom with ink and ever-changing hair colors (currently sporting teal, last year’s choice was bright pink), I can relate. I’ve faced my share of side-eye glances and unsolicited comments about my parenting based on my appearance. Spoiler alert: tattoos do not define my parenting skills!
While millennials are often highlighted for their tattoos, it’s worth noting that over a third of Gen Xers also sport some ink—especially those with kids. Yet, visible tattoos still draw judgment, particularly in professional and parental settings, which is baffling.
Our parenting styles and appearances don’t have to align with a cookie-cutter image. What truly matters is the fierce love we have for our kids! As Mia told the Huffington Post, “I wanted to present a different image of motherhood to the world.” And she does just that, making representation feel refreshing and powerful.
