10 Things I Absolutely Won’t Tolerate After 4 P.M.

It’s 4 p.m., and I’m completely over it. I have zero energy left for my kids or anyone else demanding my attention. All I want is a dinner I didn’t have to make, a glass (or three) of wine, and a cozy bed; add some chocolate, and my dreams as a mom would be fulfilled. At this hour, my parenting abilities drop significantly. If you’re a mom who can keep it together at 4 p.m. and handle the evening chaos, please share your secret. Here’s a list of things I just can’t deal with after this magical hour:

1. Answering Endless Questions

Kids are curious creatures, and their inquiries don’t stop. By late afternoon, I can barely remember my name, yet my kids fire off questions that become increasingly complex as the day drags on. I might as well wear a sign that says, “Questions are off-limits now, kiddos.” Also, I need earplugs, stat!

2. Realizing the Bake Sale You Agreed to Help With Is Tomorrow

Oh no, not again! You either forgot you signed up to whip up goodies for tomorrow or someone else roped you into it without your knowledge (it always happens after 4 p.m., right?). Discovering you need to bake three dozen cookies while also preparing dinner is just cruel.

3. My Partner Calling to Say He’ll Be Late

You’re counting down the minutes until someone walks through the door so you can finally have a moment to yourself. Then, you get a text 15 minutes before he’s due home, saying he’ll be late and to go ahead and eat without him. Thanks for that, just what I needed to edge closer to a meltdown.

4. Running Out of Caffeine

You could have sworn there was more coffee or soda somewhere, but nope, it’s all gone. After debating whether it’s worth dragging everyone to a drive-thru for a caffeine fix, you finally decide it is. Just waiting for the kids to get their shoes on takes an eternity. Might as well grab some nuggets and call it a night!

5. Staring at the Mess

You’ve already cleaned up after breakfast, lunch, and the chaos of the day. The last thing you want to do is tackle another mess, but you need the kids occupied. So, letting them zone out in front of the TV or on their devices until they can’t see straight is totally acceptable.

6. Sibling Tattling

You’ve already been a referee far too many times today. I’m out of juice! Let the kids sort it out themselves; mom is off duty.

7. Dealing with a Whiny Child

At this point, who can handle any more whining? Morning whines are slightly bearable, but by now, they make me feel physically ill. No more complaining unless you’re offering me wine, which my kids aren’t old enough for—yet.

8. Figuring Out Dinner

Especially when you realize the chicken you planned to cook is either spoiled or still frozen. You ponder takeout, but you just did that the past two nights. Hot dogs it is; I’ll do better tomorrow!

9. Partner Locking Himself in the Bathroom for Half an Hour

I get it; everyone needs some “me” time after a long day. But come on! Mothers don’t get that luxury.

10. Remembering You Have a Meeting — TONIGHT

You’re already in your pajamas or those questionable yoga pants when you glance at the calendar and see an important yet somewhat dull meeting scheduled for tonight. “Should I stay or should I go” starts playing in my head.

By 4 p.m., we’re all running on fumes, ready to call it a day. Yet, somehow, we push through until bedtime. And then, just when we see our little angels peacefully sleeping, we start to miss them, giving us the energy to do it all over again — until the clock strikes 4 p.m. the next day when parents everywhere start turning into pumpkins.
