To the Mother in the Hijab: I See You
Now, I see you fleeing from unimaginable horrors, desperately seeking safety for your children, leaving behind everything familiar. The conditions you face while escaping are heartbreaking, yet you know they are better than what you endured before. You’re a mother, just like me, ready to sacrifice everything for your kids.
I see you searching for a place of refuge, fully aware of the monumental bureaucratic hurdles in your way. You must also feel the weight of the hostility directed at you by those who fear and wish to close their borders—fearing that among you might be individuals intent on harm. But I want you to know that you are innocent, and I see you.
Do you see me? Do you notice my fair skin, the Bible resting on my table, and the Western lifestyle I lead? I bear a resemblance to those who have committed unspeakable atrocities in the name of their beliefs. I know I could fit right in at one of their gatherings, but I am not them. Their actions clash with everything I hold dear.
We might share the same origins as those who spread terror, and yes, we may even wear similar clothing or follow similar routines. But you are not them. You are escaping from them. My heart aches for your mother’s heart, and I know that’s not who you are.
There are people, like me, who care and support you. I see you.
