How to Equip Your Home Gym Without Breaking the Bank

A few months after welcoming my second little one, I found myself huffing and puffing halfway up the stairs. By the time I reached the top, I needed a breather to regain my composure. The combination of sleepless nights, breastfeeding, and an extra 20 (okay, maybe 30 or 40) pounds had taken its toll. It was clear that I needed more than just couch arm curls with my wine glass.

Feeling out of shape was a tough pill to swallow, and the thought of dragging my post-baby body to the gym next to those fit folks in their cheerful Spandex was daunting. Plus, after leaving my full-time job to stay home with the kids, our budget was tighter than a pair of superhero tights. We weren’t in dire straits, but splurging on a fancy gym membership was out of the question. The mere logistics of wrangling both kids into their car seats and hauling a bag full of snacks, diapers, and toys to the gym childcare room was already exhausting.

So, I decided to jumpstart my fitness journey at home. My kiddos loved stroller walks, and with the weather warming up, I felt bold enough to prioritize my health. As I plotted my “Lose The Baby Weight and Get Fit AF” plan, I quickly realized I needed a few essentials. My breast-milk-stained yoga pants were fine for lounging, but if I wanted to feel good about getting healthy, I needed to invest a little.

Investing in Essentials

First on my list was a quality pair of running shoes. A few friends had started running and looked fabulous in their colorful kicks, so I knew my feet would thank me for being nice to them. Bonus: My shins didn’t ache as I increased my walking mileage, thanks to my happy feet. I also treated myself to some snazzy socks and a solid pair of running tights to complete my “Get Fit AF Outdoor Look.” I’d throw my unkempt mom hair into a cute running cap before hitting the pavement. And just to clarify, that new water bottle? No vodka in there, though the thought crossed my mind—keeping two little monsters entertained during a walk is no easy feat, am I right?

Since I was breastfeeding, I needed a reliable running bra to keep “the girls” in check. Without proper support, I risked a black eye in less than a quarter-mile. Thankfully, a friendly saleswoman at a local running shop helped me find the perfect fit, and I’m pretty sure she held back laughter when she saw me wrestling into the sports bra in the dressing room. Bless her heart.

Plan B for Rainy Days

While walking was my primary workout, I knew I needed a Plan B for those rainy days. My mom abs were in need of serious help, so I splurged on an exercise ball that came with a DVD—perfect for a quick workout during naptime. I’ve always loved The Biggest Loser, and when I discovered they had yoga DVDs that matched my short window of free time, I was sold. Just 20 minutes for a healthier me! And of course, I grabbed a yoga mat to protect my feet from the Lego minefield that was my living room.

Working out at home wasn’t always a walk in the park, but the payoff was worth it. Over time, I grew stronger, and my leisurely walks turned into runs. I even found a fantastic group of friends with similar health goals, and we became our own little mom exercise squad. With their support, I managed to complete my sixth marathon last year.

Now, I feel zero guilt when I treat myself to a new pair of running shoes or a fun accessory. I’ve earned it! Shedding those 40 pounds has not only made me feel great, but taking care of myself helps me take better care of my family, and that’s a fitness strategy that’s good for everyone.
