Introducing the Safety Pin Box
For those who are truly committed but don’t know where to start, let me introduce you to the Safety Pin Box. Founded by two dynamic women, Lisa and Tara, in direct response to the Safety Pin Movement that gained traction after the election of the former president, this monthly subscription box aims to make a genuine impact. Many people of color felt the Safety Pin Movement was more about white allies easing their own guilt than taking meaningful action.
Lisa and Tara, both with deep roots in black activism, created this subscription service specifically for “white individuals who want to consistently contribute to Black liberation financially while engaging in tangible support work for the movement and learning how to dismantle white supremacy.” Their mission is to empower white people to actively contribute to the fight for Black lives, all while providing valuable educational resources from black women.
Safety Pin Box is crafted by black women for the benefit of other black women. The proceeds are directed to Black Women Being, which provides cash donations to individual black women striving for the liberation of their communities but lacking financial support. Every month, one woman is randomly selected to receive the funds generated from subscriptions. This is a far more compelling use of your money than those travel-sized beauty products, wouldn’t you agree?

The subscription has various tiers ($25, $50, and $100) that come with monthly tasks, designed to help allies learn more about specific issues and historical figures, exclusive “calls to action,” and access to a private Facebook group for subscribers to discuss, share research, and ask questions. Each month’s theme varies; for instance, December focused on “Radical Compassion,” with tasks prompting subscribers to consider the life outcomes of Black elderly individuals compared to their white counterparts. This hands-on approach pushes allies to confront their own biases, making it a vital part of the experience.
Not being the target audience myself, I asked a friend who subscribes about her motivation. “I wanted to make a difference. This was a great way to engage, and I feel really good about where my money is going,” she shared. She also highlighted how she’s been able to connect with other subscribers and participate in local actions, putting her money where her mouth is.

When asked about their target audience, Lisa explained that they’re reaching out to those who recognize that race is a pressing issue, feel compelled to take action, but aren’t quite sure how.
