James Porter Writes Empowering Letter to His 3-Year-Old Daughter
“My greatest wish for her is to embrace her true self without fear.”
Though James Porter’s daughter Lily is just three years old, her dad has already reflected deeply on the kind of woman he hopes she becomes. The actor contributed an article for the June 2017 issue of a popular magazine, celebrating the debut of his show in Las Vegas. While he often praises his partner, Sarah Porter, on social media, he took this chance to share his thoughts on the other important lady in his life — his daughter.
“I envisioned the messages I’d want her to read that could help her better understand relationships and life,” he writes. “And in that moment, I recognized something profound: I don’t want her seeking validation from the world outside. My ultimate hope is for her to possess the courage to always be herself, regardless of what she believes others expect her to be.”
Unlike many fathers, his biggest concern isn’t how society perceives his daughter but rather how she perceives herself as she matures. “We are living in a time when both men and women have long been pigeonholed into certain roles, but thankfully, we’re starting to break those molds,” he states. “Women are discovering they don’t have to adhere to outdated norms, and this evolution alters what they seek from men and what men’s roles entail.”
He attributes much of his insight to his wife, who exemplifies the potent force of a woman confident in her desires. He recalls how she confidently asserted her interest in him early in their relationship, sparking a thrilling rush that he found irresistibly attractive. “It was the most exhilarating thing she could have done,” he reminisces.
That genuine authenticity is what swept him off his feet. “Before that, I wouldn’t have known how to ask for it. Now, I realize it’s what I’ve always desired,” he explains. His dream for Lily is for her to recognize her own worth when she grows up. “I want her to love freely without the burden of societal expectations and to empower herself to pursue her true desires,” he adds.
His aspirations for Lily serve as an inspiring guide for women of all ages. It’s never too early or too late to understand our worth. We don’t need to change who we are, either physically or mentally, to find happiness. We deserve love for simply being ourselves.
James expresses his hope that all women, not just his daughter, discover the strength to embrace their authenticity. “If there’s something I wish all women knew, it’s that they are enough just as they are. When more women recognize their own power, the world will transform in ways that are truly magical.”
