7 a.m. My 6-year-old, Jake, is my alarm clock, insisting it’s time for school. “Just five more minutes,” I groan, buried under my pillow.
7:15 a.m. “Oh no!” I bolt out of bed, adrenaline kicking in. We need to leave in 20 minutes, and I still have to whip up breakfast, ensure Jake has all his books, folders, lunch, and those pesky papers I was supposed to sign yesterday but can’t seem to locate. Instead, I stumble upon the notice about Pajama Day, which was, of course, yesterday — yikes. I glance over at Jake, who’s happily munching on cereal. He seems blissfully unaware of the chaos I’m trying to juggle.
7:35 a.m. Just as I’m about to step outside, my oldest daughter, Lily, blocks the door. “Mom! Don’t forget my game tonight! Can you please wash my uniform?” Oh right, it’s Friday again! “Of course, but you’ve known about this all week. Why didn’t you wash it yourself?” She rolls her eyes dramatically, “Because we’re out of detergent! I told you two days ago!” Ah, yes. The familiar tension hangs in the air. “I’ll take care of it, I promise!” I say, giving her a reassuring kiss before grabbing Jake and dashing to the car.
8 a.m. After dropping Jake off, I walk back into the house and see the cheer uniform lying on the washing machine. Ugh, why didn’t I stop at the grocery store across the street from school? Back to the car I go… but wait, I should check the fridge first. Good thing I did! We’re almost out of milk, eggs are gone, and I remember I’m supposed to bring juice boxes for the boys’ game tomorrow. I deliberately chose to be “juice mom” for the first game—what a way to kick off the season!
Feeling proud of my mental checklist, I dash to grab a pen and realize that none of them work. Great. I toss a few onto my mental to-do list as I hop in the shower.
9 a.m. I’m blow-drying my hair, pondering why it takes so long. I remember how quickly the salon gets it done. Maybe it’s the watts? I wonder if the grocery store has high-watt hair dryers. Probably not. I Google “best hair dryer ever.” Wow, there are some pricey ones out there! Well, maybe a concentrator attachment would help. I check Amazon and discover I still have items in my cart — oh no! I forgot to check out after ordering baseball pants for the boys. I’ll have to grab some after the grocery stop. Oh look! Victoria’s Secret has a semi-annual sale ending today. I better place an order while I’m at it.
11 a.m. Fast forward to 11 o’clock — I’ve successfully ordered three bras and five pairs of panties, and I stumbled upon a great website with cleaning tips I’m definitely trying later. But first, I’m hunting through my coupons for some grocery deals.
12:30 p.m. Whoa, time to go! I didn’t find coupons for what I needed, but I did spot some great sales. If my math is right, I can snag toothpaste, eyeshadow, men’s body wash, and razors for only $3.75. Definitely making that stop on my way to the grocery store!
1:30 p.m. Okay, that math was off; the 25% off didn’t apply to everything. But I still scored all my items for under $10. Not too shabby! Now on to find those baseball pants.
2 p.m. Success! I’m in and out, and both boys will be ready for their game tomorrow. Next up: juice boxes.
2:30 p.m. I walk into the grocery store, heading straight for the juice boxes. I’m feeling pretty proud of myself. My husband will appreciate my organization, and I won’t have to make an embarrassing last-minute run to the corner store, where the markup is outrageous! I recall my grocery list mentally and grab the essentials: eggs, milk, and, yes, even pens. I also pick up a magnetic notepad with an attached pen for future lists. I leave the store feeling accomplished — this is what it must feel like to be “normal.”
3:15 p.m. I pull into the garage just as my kids come home. I’m riding high on my organizational success, even grabbing the empty coffee cup I would’ve normally left behind. But as I walk in, there it is again — the cheer uniform on the washing machine. Ah well, I guess the adventure never ends.
