Dear Working Mom,
I truly admire your strength and resilience.
We’ve all seen that infamous BBC interview where a father was interrupted by his young children during a serious discussion about democracy. It was a hilarious moment, especially when a friend shared a parody imagining how it would look if it happened to a working mom. The humor was relatable, yet it highlighted an all-too-real scenario that many working mothers face daily.
Honestly, I don’t know how you manage it all. Each morning, you rise early to ensure not only your little ones are ready for the day, but also that you look polished and put together. From hair and makeup to clothes that aren’t just comfy activewear, you handle it effortlessly.
You juggle breakfast preparations, packing lunches, and coaxing your children to eat—all while gearing up mentally for the tasks awaiting you at work. You navigate the school run, give that “one last kiss,” and somehow make it to your job on time.
You balance meetings, pediatrician appointments, and conference calls, all while dealing with the occasional eye-roll from those who don’t understand when you need to leave right at 5 p.m. (I can almost hear the half-joking remarks: “Is it a half-day for you?”) You keep track of permission slips and birthday gifts while crafting a presentation for a boardroom full of people.
After your workday, you transition into your more demanding role at home. You cook dinner, listen to tales about their day, and manage a flurry of activities. You celebrate their accomplishments, oversee homework, and resolve sibling arguments. You kiss boo-boos and read bedtime stories. Then, when the kids are finally asleep, you tackle household chores, organize school uniforms, sift through mail, and carve out precious time with your partner.
I may not fully grasp how you accomplish all of this, but you do it.
Working moms are the unsung heroes of our society, embodying true strength and perseverance. Your efforts often go unnoticed, yet you make it look so seamless. You ensure your children know they are your priority while also advancing your career, paving the way for others.
There’s often a divide between different groups of women—some criticize stay-at-home moms, while others judge those who return to work. However, I believe we all share common feelings of guilt and regret, regardless of our choices. It’s important to remember that judgment has no place among us.
It’s said that it takes a village to raise a child, yet when the night falls, you remain Mom. You are the one who knows where everyone is, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. You deserve recognition for handling an impossible job, regardless of the support you receive.
From my perspective, I just want to express my heartfelt gratitude: Thank you, working mom. Thank you for navigating the toughest job in the world with grace. Thank you for brushing off judgment from those who don’t understand, because you have far more important things to focus on. Thank you for prioritizing your children, even when it means leaving a meeting early to return to them.
Every day, you are making strides toward normalizing work-life balance for parents, often at the expense of your own comfort. Thank you for showing us the importance of preserving our identities beyond motherhood.
Thank you for holding the door open for those of us who have taken longer to return to work, ensuring the path remains clear for our return.
I don’t know how you do it, but I am grateful. You are truly my hero.
Warm regards,
A Grateful Mom
