I managed to binge the entire series in about 48 hours, which might say a lot about my self-discipline. During that time, I honestly can’t recall if I took a shower, if my kids had proper meals, or if anything existed outside the small town of Woodstock, Alabama. Someone mentioned that listening to it felt like diving into a novel, and that couldn’t be more accurate. It’s a true story filled with potential murder, a brilliant and eccentric clockmaker hiding secrets, lost treasure, and an unbelievable twist at the end that you won’t see coming. I genuinely learned a lot from this.
John B. McLemore is deeply unhappy in his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, yet he can’t quite figure out why he hasn’t left. As described on the podcast’s website, “he asks Brian, a producer from This American Life, to look into a wealthy family’s son who’s reportedly been boasting about getting away with murder. But then another person ends up dead, and the quest for the truth spirals into a nasty feud, a treasure hunt, and an exploration of one man’s enigmatic life.”
Oh my gosh! I would pay anything to experience this… Oh wait, did I mention it’s completely free?
S-Town, short for Shit-Town, is produced by the same team behind Serial and This American Life. After spending roughly seven hours with Brian Reed, I feel like he’s a close friend. He vividly brings the town to life in such a relatable, humorous, and human manner—it’s as if I was wandering through John B. McLemore’s intricate world or nervously standing in a tattoo parlor contemplating a confrontation with a possible murderer, piecing together the surprising connections among the residents of this small community.
Having grown up in a small town filled with quirky characters and unsolved mysteries, I found the producers did an exceptional job revealing the cultural, socioeconomic, and racial complexities of an Alabama town. I dreamt about visiting Woodstock after immersing myself in this story—did I mention I might be a tad obsessed?
I won’t spoil the details because you need to experience every unexpected turn just as I did. At one point, I had to pause the episode to pick my jaw up off the ground. I highly recommend listening with a friend so you have someone to share your thoughts with—otherwise, you might end up like me, fervently urging others to tune in.
According to Variety, the S-Town podcast broke records with over 10 million downloads in just four days. Once you start listening, you’ll understand why.
