“The Americans,” easily the finest show on television, transcends the typical spy drama by delving into the complexities of marriage and relationships. It’s the only series that can liken DIY dental work to a turbulent partnership and would undoubtedly sweep the fictional Wig Awards if they existed. More than this, it’s my weekly trip back to the wonderfully peculiar yet uncomplicated days of my youth. Here are eight reasons why “The Americans” makes me nostalgic for the ’80s. (Spoilers ahead!)
1. Parenting, the Free-Range Way
In 2015, Philip and Elizabeth, our Soviet spy duo navigating suburban DC, would be seen as epic fails in parenting. The term “latch-key kids” barely scratches the surface. By the time I hit 17, my parents were totally okay with leaving me home alone for weekends—until they discovered the infamous open-house bashes I threw. (Ah, those were the days!)
2. Books in Bed
Teenage Emma, the daughter of our protagonists, evokes memories of dozing off with a hardcover novel resting on my chest. I’d gladly swap my current evening routine of scrolling through social media for the comfort of a good book.
3. Classic Scrabble
Forget about Words with Friends—give me a vintage Scrabble board any day! I miss the tactile joy of aligning those cool, smooth letter tiles while relishing the satisfying sound of a triple word score. (Of course, if I had played with a Machiavellian spy-handler, perhaps my nostalgia would be less intense.)
4. YAZ
Ah, the music of the ’80s!
5. Political Naivety
While the show often portrays intense violence and skewed political landscapes, there’s something refreshing about characters driven by ideals beyond mere money or power. In the pre-Citizen’s United world of “The Americans,” passionate beliefs—albeit warped—propel the narrative forward. Everyone seems to aspire to make a difference and genuinely believe they can.
6. Chic ’80s Fashion
Most memories of ’80s fashion highlight the cringe-worthy styles—oversized shoulder pads battling massive hair. Yet “The Americans” showcases the era’s elegance, particularly through Emma’s stunning wardrobe. Keri Russell’s impeccable figure seems tailor-made for chic neutral wrap dresses and high-waisted jeans. I’m now inspired to rock a fitted black turtleneck beneath a stylish blazer!
7. Adam Ant
When you’re fifteen and an older guy is sneaking around to meet you at a party with some weed, it’s a bonus when “Goody Two Shoes” plays in the background. Especially if that guy is the dashing Ryan in a leather jacket and shades!
8. Authentic Dinners with Friends
Bring on the awkward silences, deep secrets, and thrilling intrigue over a plate of spaghetti. I’d trade a single meal free from phones and selfies for the scheming of KGB agents any day. Philip and Elizabeth could recruit me in a heartbeat if it meant living in a world devoid of emojis and Snapchat.
