The Simple Pleasures That Make Me Feel Fabulous in My 40s

When it comes to aging, society often paints a stark picture—short hair, conservative wardrobes, and a strict diet of kale. But what about the vibrant in-between? We don’t suddenly hit 40 and transform into one-dimensional, grumpy figures. Instead, we flourish in a nuanced space where we embrace our authentic selves. We might be a bit bolder with our language, enjoy more intimate moments, and experiment with daring makeup choices.

I remember a decade ago, working alongside a diverse group of women in our 30s at an after-school program for kids facing challenges. With various life experiences—some married, some like me newly engaged, and none with children—we were passionate and ambitious. One afternoon, Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” played at the office. We started swaying, and then Megan exclaimed, “Maybe I’m too old for this Top 40 stuff, but I can’t help but love this song!” We all chuckled in agreement, but I found myself pondering: can music really have an age limit?

Surely, there are things that transcend age and resonate with our inner vibrancy. For instance, I own a simple T-shirt that, despite its ordinary appearance, has the perfect cut and fabric that accentuates my best features. Even on challenging days, slipping into it transforms my mood.

Here are several delightful things that make me feel beautiful, untouched by the passage of time:

  1. A Classic White Shirt
Whether it’s a casual T-shirt or a crisp button-down, growing up with icons like Ralph Lauren and Bruce Springsteen has solidified the white shirt as a timeless symbol of effortless style and fun.
  2. My Go-To Jeans
A few years back, I splurged on a pair of jeans that made me feel incredible. They were slightly distressed and fit like they were custom-made for me. As they’ve aged, so have the holes, but they evoke a nostalgic thrill reminiscent of my 80s childhood and my admiration for Cindy Crawford.
  3. The Black Crowes’ ‘Hard to Handle’
This song always gets me moving. “Hey little thing let me light your candle cause’a mama I’m so hard to handle, yes I am!” I can never get the lyrics just right, but that doesn’t stop me from singing along with gusto. I refuse to believe I’ll ever be too old for this anthem.
  4. A Good Hair Day
There’s something magical about those days when your hair cooperates, whether it curls just right or surprises you with volume. It can change your entire outlook.
  5. Painted Toenails
Salon visits aren’t necessary for this little treat. When I look down at my shiny red or silver toenails, it’s a small reminder that I took a moment for myself, and that feels wonderful.
  6. Next-Day Vibes
In college, a roommate once claimed that the day after a night of intimacy, your hair looks fabulous. I don’t know if there’s truth to it, but now I think of “next-day looks” as the shared, satisfied glances between my husband and me after a night of connection. It’s a sweet reminder of intimacy.

There are countless ways we can feel sexy and fulfilled, independent of age. I refuse to let societal norms dictate what’s deemed “appropriate” for me. And yes, I’ve even found a new appreciation for kale smoothies.
