I thrive in the summer heat! The sun doesn’t scare me, even if I sometimes worry my nightly Retin-A routine is making my skin too sensitive to soak up those sunny rays. Bring on the humidity and those lazy, sun-soaked days—this is when I truly come alive. I’ll complain about the winter chill and snow, but summer is my jam. The longer days inspire a sense of ambition to tackle everything I didn’t accomplish earlier in the year. Forget about New Year’s resolutions; I’m all about summer goals. Yet, just like every resolution, by mid-July, I find myself breaking them. What is it about summer that ignites our desire to live fully, only to have those dreams fizzle out? I have it on good authority that many of us pledged the following in late May, and now we’re just enjoying our comfy couches.
1. Get Moving Outdoors!
All winter long, I used the threat of BLACK ICE to avoid running. Even when it was a mild 45 degrees and sunny, I convinced myself that slipping was a real danger and opted for binge-watching my favorite shows instead. But summer arrives, and I picture myself doing sunrise yoga or taking evening walks post-dinner. Yet, despite the longer days, I’m just as exhausted, and let’s face it—sometimes it’s too hot to venture outside. A little gentle stretching on the couch sounds much more appealing!
2. Feast on Fresh Produce!
It’s summertime! We’re going to cultivate our own veggies and pick fresh strawberries! We’ll hit up local farm stands for unique finds like purple carrots and whip up a stunning vegetable gratin. But if your fridge isn’t overflowing with fresh produce, you’re doing better than I am.
3. Rock That Flowy Dress!
My closet is packed with summer clothing that I dream of wearing—everything from cherry-print sundresses to a long, bohemian maxi dress that’s perfect for last-minute getaways. Yet, I’ve spent this entire summer rotating between the same three comfy dresses since June 1st.
4. Dive Back Into Reading!
With nothing but reruns on TV, summer is the perfect time to catch up on all those books I missed during the long winter. I plan to declare Screenless Saturdays for family reading time! But have you seen the latest reality series? Does scrolling through Twitter count as “reading”?
5. Brew Sun Tea!
I’m going to embrace homemade drinks—sun tea, cold brew coffee, and refreshing watermelon agua fresca will be my summer staples! The truth? I’m also perfectly happy with instant lemonade in a pinch.
6. Sunscreen Galore!
I start summer with a diligent sunscreen routine, but then those warm beach days happen. After a long shower, I sometimes forget to reapply, and before I know it, I’m looking like a lobster after a day in the sun!
7. Enjoy Outdoor Events!
Summer brings a plethora of free outdoor activities, from movie nights to jazz concerts. I’ve added countless events to my calendar but ended up attending none of them. It’s easy to plan to lead a lively summer life, yet sometimes the best way to enjoy the season is simply to do what makes you happy. And don’t skimp on that sunscreen!
In summary, summer is filled with ambitious plans that often fall by the wayside, whether it’s outdoor adventures or healthy eating habits. Ultimately, the best way to enjoy the season is to embrace what you truly love—while making sure to protect your skin!
