I No Longer Feel Bad About Treating Myself

Parenting can be quite an expensive journey. It’s not just the typical “Wow, I didn’t see that coming!” kind of pricey; it’s the “Yikes, this purchase is seriously affecting my budget!” kind of expensive. It may even lead to thoughts like, “If I sold this, I could probably retire early!”

Having children often makes you reflect on your life choices: “What would my life look like without kids? I could be living it up, right?” or “Without kids, I’d probably have a mountain of cash saved up!”

Honestly, if I didn’t have my two kids, I’d consider living in a tiny shed, saving every bit of wealth I could gather for my future plans, or maybe even starting a quirky film studio focused on ferret adventures. Who knows? The possibilities are endless when you’re child-free!

But reality hits hard. I have kids, and they have needs—food, clothing, healthcare, and education—so many expenses that by the time I’ve taken care of them, there’s hardly anything left for me. And let’s face it, the need to provide for them never really ends. Even after I’m gone, they’ll still be searching my pockets for any leftover cash.

That’s why I make a point to set aside some funds just for myself, and I refuse to feel guilty about spending it! I work hard for my money, and as long as my kids have what they need—like that allergy medicine or those fruit snacks they adore—I’m treating myself too! Here are 13 things I’ll never feel guilty about splurging on:

  1. Craft Beer: Honestly, if anyone should feel guilty, it’s my kids for pushing me to enjoy it!
  2. Whiskey: Same reason as above.
  3. Wine: The trend continues.
  4. Mixed Drinks: I swear, it’s for my partner!
  5. Gourmet Burgers: Who can resist Shake Shack?
  6. Beer at Shake Shack: Okay, maybe I do have a bit of a problem.
  7. Movie Outings: I’d feel less guilty if I could avoid the babysitter fees! This isn’t guilt; it’s a statement.
  8. Concerts: Babysitter expenses strike again! Nope, not happening. #NEVERBABYSITTER
  9. Pizza: Honestly, I worry more about our pizza habit than our drinking, but not enough to feel guilty.
  10. Books: Wait, what?
  11. Library Fines: More like it.
  12. Music: Essential for surviving parenthood in a noisy household.
  13. Childcare: Sometimes, a night out is a must!

There’s already so much to feel guilty about in parenting. Setting aside some funds for the little joys in life? That’s not on my guilt list. I save that for bigger issues, like paying for a gym membership I hardly use or renting mediocre movies.
