Breastfeeding, Formula Feeding, Who Really Cares?

As we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month, it’s a moment to honor nursing mothers, eliminate the stigma around breastfeeding in public, and highlight the numerous benefits of breastfeeding. While these initiatives are indeed valuable, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness when reflecting on my own journey as a mother who was unable to breastfeed any of my children. Nearly a decade after my struggles with feeding my first child (and later my second and third), there’s still no other topic that evokes such feelings of inadequacy, despite the many parenting challenges I’ve faced since.

That’s why I’m particularly drawn to the “I Support You” movement, recently introduced by Jane Ellis from Parent by the Bay, Lisa Roberts from Formula Freedom, and Emma Lane from Not Just a Babysitter (who’s also known for that eye-catching magazine cover). This initiative aims to unite mothers, whether they choose to breastfeed or use formula, under the common goal of nourishing our children with love—regardless of the method.

“We’re standing together, and we’re inviting you to join us. You, at the breastfeeding support group. You, in the office of a lactation consultant, fine-tuning your newborn’s latch. You, discreetly nursing in a cozy corner of a store. You, proudly nursing at your child’s sports event, showing the world that every choice is valid. You, who have shed tears over your feeding decisions, and you, who have made choices without fear.

I support you.

You, in the hospital, requesting formula. You, cradling your baby while expertly shaking a bottle with one hand. You, who have meticulously researched the best formulas for your baby’s tummy. You, who pump, mix, and combo-feed—every single one of you deserves recognition.

I support you.

You, alongside your partner, nurturing the baby you are hoping to adopt. You, who have faced health challenges but are now sharing a moment with new life. You, who prioritized your mental and physical well-being to ensure that both you and your baby are thriving. You, the dad bottle-feeding your infant. You, the mom navigating tube feeding. You, pumping in the NICU, your heart set on the little one relying on you. You, caring for a foster child, showering them with love and healing.

We see you. You are part of this important conversation too.

We support you.

Absolutely! We all need support on this parenting journey.
