As I reflect on my own parenting adventure, I can’t help but think about what I’d love my kids to master before they embark on their own journeys. This isn’t about the grand milestones like achieving career success or mastering life skills. Instead, these are the little yet significant accomplishments that would make my heart swell with pride (and save me from a few headaches along the way).
- Dress themselves with style (or at least without looking like a tornado hit them).
- Remember their backpack and lunch when they head out for school.
- Avoid using their clothes as makeshift napkins.
- Master proper hygiene after bathroom breaks.
- Engage in play without requiring my constant supervision.
- Shower thoroughly, rinsing out all the shampoo and conditioner.
- Come home from school with everything I sent them with—no missing items!
- Complete their homework independently, without me needing to remind them every five minutes.
- Stow away their winter gear neatly instead of leaving it scattered on the floor.
- Learn the importance of lifting the toilet seat.
- Tidy their rooms before I need to intervene dramatically.
- Answer the simple question “How was school?” with more than just “Fine” or “It sucks.”
- Settle down for the night and actually stay in bed.
- Brush their teeth twice daily without a fuss or a reminder.
- Step inside the house without dragging in dirt.
- Place their dirty laundry in the hamper—or better yet, in the laundry room.
- Refrain from declaring “I’m bored” every five minutes.
- Dispose of tissues and socks in the right place, not on the floor.
- Put away their clean laundry without being asked, and not all crammed into one drawer or hidden under the bed.
- Help with the dishes, even if that means just putting them in the sink. If I’m feeling particularly ambitious, maybe they’ll even load the dishwasher!
This list may seem like a whimsical dream, but if people can aspire to visit the Seven Wonders of the World, surely I can wish for my child to cap the toothpaste properly! In summary, the parenting journey is filled with both hilarious and heartfelt moments. While I may dream of a perfectly tidy house and well-behaved children, I know that the real joy lies in the beautiful chaos of raising them.
