10 Parenting Moments That Give Me the Willies

Ah, the joys of motherhood! Who could forget those sleepless nights spent comforting a fussy infant? Or the endless days of negotiating with your toddler, offering gummy candies just to get them to use the potty? While we often roll our eyes at these less-than-glamorous parenting experiences, the future of raising kids looks downright intimidating.

As my seven-year-old prepares to leave first grade behind, I can’t help but feel like he’s on the fast track to junior high, complete with crushes and car keys. When I think about the trying and, yes, sometimes heart-wrenching moments that lie ahead, I can’t help but appreciate these days when my biggest worry is whether they should be allowed to watch yet another episode of that chaotic show, “Bubble Guppies.” Here are ten moments that I can’t help but dread…

  1. When my kids inquire about my teenage years—whether I ever smoked, drank, or did anything rebellious. Do I fabricate a story or share a diluted truth?
  2. Discovering something unexpected while changing my son’s sheets during his teenage years. Yeah, you know what I mean.
  3. Having “the talk.” At least my partner and I can divide the awkwardness since we have a boy and a girl, but it seems like I’m the one who has to explain everything from tampons to childbirth in a way that sounds appealing.
  4. Hearing “I hate you!” from my kids, and knowing they really mean it.
  5. The first time one of my children faces bullying—whether it’s online, at school, or from the neighborhood “mean girls.” I’d like to think it won’t happen, but it feels inevitable nowadays.
  6. Coexisting with a moody, dramatic teenage daughter. There’s only room for one of us to be moody in this house, and it’s me. Thanks for the karma, Mom and Dad.
  7. Coming to terms with the fact that I can no longer help with their homework (algebra, anyone?), which will undoubtedly lead them to think they’re smarter than me.
  8. Setting curfews and then anxiously waiting up, watching the clock tick by until they safely return home. Thank goodness for texting! Remember the old days of that dreaded 11:30 PM call to your parents letting them know you’d be late?
  9. Two words: learner’s permit.
  10. The moment I transition from “Mommy” to just “Mom.”
